I was thinking yesterday about people being members of the site and contributing and what have you when i thought of what i believe to be a good idea. I didnt know exactly where to put it, so i figured here would be a good start.

We have lots of contests during the bash, and the staff do an amazing job turning this place into party central! There are contests for cool pens, and cool tutorials, and even who can lie the best...

So why not something for the contributor of the year? The top honor of the entire bash. The thread count could be part of the qualifications, and naturally it would go to whoever was voted as the best contributor for that year.

The prize for this award should be a prize pack. The biggest and nicest prize pack of the bash... I think it would motivate people to share even more if they knew there was a chance they could win some HUGELY AWESOME prize pack just for being a contributor to the site!

Anyway... It was just a thought. If it is a bad idea, then nevermind. I just wanted to bring it up!!

Ron~contests...bash??? party?? When?? Where?? I can lie REALLY GOOD!! I am in LAX airport waiting for the next flight to Newark. wait thats a dream... I think I need to go read about this party bash you are talking about..

It is called the Birthday Bash. It is held once a year and it is a HUGE deal around here for about two or three months. It only lasts a month long, but there is fun and games galore! Members and vendors alike donate awesome prizes for all the contests! At the last bash, I won a "Autism Puzzle Pen Kit" valued at more than any other blank i have ever done! In fact, the kit went on a Rhodium Full Size Gent, and the donor of the kit (GO LOU!!!) Even sent me a free giant flexsteel nib for my pen! The pen is in my gallery if you want to see it! It will be easy to spot... Just look for the pen that looks like a jigsaw puzzle!

Anyway, there are several contests based on building a pen with specific instructions, there is gifts for who is voted as having the best tutorial for the year, there is a guessing game where you try to name the snakeskins, there is even a contest strictly for the people that did not win anything during the process of the bash. I just figured the Best Contributor for the year would be a very worthy catagory for a major prize. I can think of two or three people worthy of a vote right now... And the year isn't even half over yet!

I hate to hijack my own thread, but Toni... How did you put the link to your tutorial in your signature? that is a cool idea to keep tutorials handy!

Ok, I figured out how to put the link in but how did you shorten it to three words or whatever? When i put the link in my signature, it is a mile long.

Ron I am sooo screwed!! no chance of me wining any prizes!! lucky I know what cactus looks like!! LOL

As for the sigy thing with the link to the PC Tut...well ummm....I dont know it magically appeared there one day:rolleyes::rolleyes: Think the GodFather put it there:tongue:

WOOT WOOT! I will figure it out. somebody will surely PM me telling me how to do it, or where to go for instructions!! This place is pretty cool like that!

You aren't totally screwed! There are a couple of catagories you could win! Who knows, you may even motivate your own catagory... Best PC pen!

There is a vote on the best tutorial of the year, and your PC tutorial, allthough it still isnt in the library, is a wicked tut!

You could always enter the liars club contest:cool:... But fair warning, I won that prize last year, and i have every intention of defending my belt! I have already started writing this years story!

Ok, Maybe you should just stick to the losers club contest!!!:biggrin::biggrin:

OR.... you could always start turning pens and compete with us all!:biggrin:

Lets see, you want to have a contest that awards whomever, that talks to much. Or is quality more deserving than quantity?

Ron, I like the idea, But want to add a warning. Last year could very well have been the year of the Pendant. I just would not want to see something turn into a war because it was not pen related. But there is always risk of war when things are added removed or changed. So don't let that slow you down. Some might be hard to track down to just an individual. Example: Who in the past would be awarded for the Pressure Pot? I say put all names in a hat and let the group vote. and let that vote rule. But with jsut the examples above and many many more I can think of such as segmented blanks, wasted wood, and CA or effective Skew tutorials. I strongly agree that many many significant contributions need to be better recognized. I like this idea very much. I have seen past contributions completely change the direction that penturning is headed.

It would be based partly on both. Quantity and Quality. Allthough, most of the quality stuff comes from the people with a high quantity post count!

Ideally, the winner every year would be someone that contributes solid information. I am not saying the person that came up with an idea should be the person to win the award. I am saying the person that contributed in such a way as to assist a number of turners at the same time. Case in point: A month or two ago, I was getting lost in the world of kitless pens. There were a few of us that were beating our heads against the wall. Skiprat posted several very lengthy and informative threads about how to do what we were all struggling with. No doubt he didnt invent the kitless pen, but i can tell you of about 10 or 15 people that would totally vote his name because of those threads he wrote.

So it isnt really about who has the best idea, but instead about who has been the most helpful, who contributed more ideas and knowledge. A noob to the site could totally win, if they shared enough knowledge over the course of the year.

There could be nominations. You have to be anonymously nominated to be on the voting register. Once you get the nomination, you are then added to the list of candidates. No reasons would be given as to why this person is on the docket, so that would help eliminate some fighting over who had the idea that lead to the nomination. Then everyone on the site votes for the top contributor. Whoever gets the votes, wins!

But what would we do about Ed?:confused::biggrin::biggrin::biggrin:

Well, Like i said, Most of the good stuff comes from those with high post counts. If you sort through his posts, SURELY you can find SOMETHING usefull!:biggrin::biggrin::eek::biggrin::biggrin::biggrin:

I thought we had a contest for the best Tutorial, I shudder to think about a contest for the most posts. I mean how many thousands of "nice pen" posts just to boost your post counts would flood the site. Other contests we would have to conisder, "most Annoying", post or Postee, "Best Avatar" "Least Useful" post and for ED "Most posts without a post count"

Yeah, If we did that then the site would fill to the top with spam.

Good idea!

My first thought was also "What about Ed?" But then you mentioned a "quality" element, so I stopped worrying! ;-)

As far as making it work efficiently for the Bash, I would suggest that contestants be "nominated". We could look at the post-counts for the year, and the top five (or ten) would get automatic nominations. Then we would have a period where individuals could nominate someone based on "value" or "quality". Once the nominations are all in, we could vote by means of a closed poll or something.

Toni - I'm sure we could design a contest just for you!!! ;-)

Scott.

P.S. - Please note that my TOTAL post count is less than 1900, EVER!!! And I've contributed lots of good quality stuff to this site - uh, like - uh, The Ugly Pen Contest!

;-)

Scott.

:mad::mad:Keep it up!!!!:mad::mad:

:biggrin:You will all have the honor of distributing prizes next year!!!!:biggrin:

:)(And boy, I know which prizes pose the most "challenges"):eek::eek:

Isnt the Bash like 9 MONTHS AWAY?? :foot-in-mouth:

You are discussing this now? Geeze and I thought I was bad counting down my birthday on April 1st:eek:

"Most posts without a post count"
How does that work?

Keep it up!!!!:mad::mad:

I for one think that Ed should automatically be nominated at the top. I mean, I personally think that EVERY one of his 10,000 posts are chock FULL of useful information, and his participation in the bash makes the impossible possible and without his BRILLIANT insight people like me would not even be able to feed themselves without drooling all over themselves:biggrin::biggrin: Ed, you're welcome and the address for my check is...:biggrin::biggrin:

I don't think this is particularly a good idea.

Having a contest based on thread counts and number of tutorials or "helpful" posts would only flood the forum with a few members cranking out a dozen tutorials a week, starting threads just for the sake of starting threads all in the name of being "helpful" but with the real ulterior motive being voted most popular member on the forum.

I look at it this way, if you want to write a post with the goal of helping another member, than good for you, we appreciate the information. If you want to write a tutorial to share your knowledge on a topic then good for you, we appreciate the information.

But to help others simply to gain recognition and have your name in the lime light is in my opinion is pretty shallow.

What's wrong with helping others just for the sake of helping others and leaving it at that?

This is just my opinion and I am positive there are those who will disagree!

Disagree? Hell, I think you should run for President! Lord only know what motivates our current one?

Flight to Newark? Sounds more like a nightmare to me!
:)

No I am pretty sure I am living the nightmare here, newark is close enough to where I grow up in Union.

What's wrong with helping others just for the sake of helping others and leaving it at that?

George~I agree with you 100%!!

Toni;

Is NZ really that bad...I always heard it was nice and was thinking of visiting next year on my way home from China but your notes are giving me pause.

Thanks for posting to my thread George! I didnt think you could even see my threads!

I Agree and disagree with this. We already have a contest for best tutorial of the year, but that doesnt cause anyone to just throw tutorials out left and right. Not to mention, by that thinkng, we should just cancel the whole bash. I mean why give prizes away at all... For anything?

I do agree that people should help just for the sake of helping. But on the other hand, I see nothing wrong with giving the most helpful person a prize for being so helpful. If that makes me shallow, then I guess i am shallow.

I figured.... We allready give prizes for some fairly goofy contests, Why not have one that is really meaningful!?

Anyway.. It was just an idea. I am going to continue to contribute all that i can regardless of any contest.

OK, I'm curious, so what is your definition of "the most helpful person"? Is it the person who posts 30 times a day, writes 20 tutorials a year on everything from "10 tips on getting your shop organized" to "Pigments in casting resings - how to properly mix them"? Or is it the person who posts a few times a year but when they do, it's usually worthwhile reading?

I guess we'll just agree to disagree since I still fail to see the need for a "most helpful person" to begin with and just leave it at that.

You're right, I didn't read your posts for quite some time but recently your posting has increased quite a bit and I got curious what it was all about. Now after reading this thread, particularly this phrase.... "So why not something for the contributor of the year? The top honor of the entire bash. The thread count could be part of the qualifications, and naturally it would go to whoever was voted as the best contributor for that year.", I think I see why!

Goerge,

I have already had a flame war with you on the boards which is why i believe you stopped reading my posts for a long time. I am not trying to get into another flame war with you. I will not slam you, and would appreciate it if you would not insult my character by implying that i am trying to milk this site for anything other than friendship and knowledge. The only thing i have ever asked of the members of this site was for donations of pens for some very deserving kids. I turned down offers of financial help when i was trying to get my wife from Okalhoma to Chicago for a funeral, so your comment was very insulting to me.

Over the last few days my post count has increased because i was busy in my shop for the last week or so and have had very limited time to hang out here, which i enjoy. And if my post count has grown before that, well i guess i just got alot to say.

I believe if there were an award, it should go to the person that has the most helpfull posts all the way around. Skiprat comes to mind right off the top, As does Ed, Glass Scratcher, Lou, and believe it or not, I think you are pretty high up there (all though your negativity might prevent people from voting for you:eek::biggrin:).

Remember, when i said that post count COULD BE a part of the qualifications, It was merely an idea. I dont think it should be "Spammer of the year", which is what you seem to think i want.

I think some people have lost sight of what this website is all about. the sharing of knowledge. That is the whole purpose of most of the forum boards here. I just figured that a CHANCE to win something might provoke some of the lurkers to come out and actually contribute their knowledge and skills.

Believe it or not, It was just an idea that i had and i thought it might be cool, so i brought it up. We can forget about it and all sit around and mean mug each other for all i care. (where is the mean mug smiley when you need it!!)
