Here a some pictures of Iced trees from my neighbors 2 doors down, so far we only have lost one med. branch of our large pecan tree in the front yard and the weather service said that we can expect another 1/2-3/4 inch of ice more tonight. We are one of the lucky ones as we still have electricty but no phone, but my DSL is working.

Reminds me of the ice storms we've had. Two trees you don't want are pines and Bradford Pears. We had a bad one when I had 34 large pines in my yard and it sounded like rifle shots every 20 mins. Your pictures remind me of my Bradford Pear. I was out with a pole beating the ice off the limbs and managed to save it when nearly everyone on the street lost theirs. However, 6 months later, a hurricane split it 3 different directions. [:(]
My wife took a section of trunk and drilled sockets and we put tenons on some of the limbs and made reindeer for Christmas decorations.

Glad you only lost a few limbs.

yep, that's alot of ice. I never real think much of Oklahoma having to deal much with ice and snow like up here in Michigan. I know we always have at least a couple ice storms to deal with where I have to get out my chain saw. I think if I understand the news properly, the reason for your ice is all the cows in Australia that keep farting which is causing mass global warming in Oklahoma. [;)]

Jeff your 1/2 right about the cows in Australia farting the other 1/2 is the Roos burping add the 2 together and now you have global warming causing the Ice 1/2 way around the world in Oklahoma.

I think I know of someone who will have a lot of pen blanks for sale real soon. [;)][:D][:D]
That is a lot of ice, but I am glad you and yours are doing allright. So far we have missed out on the really cold weather here in Houston.

Rob

Roy,
I've been telling my wife for years about the ice storms in Kansas and what they would do to trees. now I can show her your photos. stay warm and safe.

I have a friend that is doing temp work in at the OKC airport. PHX loaned him out for 1 month due to shortage of employees there. He went with ZERO pants just shorts. That is all we wear here just about. I saw some pictures he sent his wife of belt loaders covered in ice so bad they were unusable. LOL

BTW he went out and bought a pair of sweat style pants. hahahaha

Glad to hear you are ok.

Here in Kansas we have not been outside in two days. We were lucky tho and was only without electric for abou 2 1/2 hours.
My shop is so cold that when I built a fire the flames froze [:p]

I was wondering how you were out there in your neck of the woods, Roy. I scraped up to 1" of ice off my car to get to work this morning. Drove around lots of downed tree limbs and trees. Had to go home at lunch to whack the branches in the back yard and knock ice off so they would quit sagging on the line from the pole to the house. Guess I may do some trimming when all this is done. And the trees I have........4 Bradford pears in the back, and 3 pines in the front!! The big pin-oak in the back has lost a couple of branches, may have toasted the trampoline =8^(. I think there is more damage than the bigstorm of a few years ago, at least in my neighborhood. We, too, at least have power. Just me and one other guy left at the shop. Both of us will be leaving shortly!

Well heres an update, that Pecan in the front has lost 4 more big limbs and I had a Carolina Jasmin that almost covered the complete northside of my shop on a trellis, I use the word had as I just went out back and the trellis and Jasmin are lying on the ground, but we still have electricity,Direct TV,and a couple of good bottles of wine and chesse so were all set. Rob yes come this summer I will have a "lot" of Pecan Blanks for sale or trade as I also lost a large limb early this fall that I cut into logs that are waiting to be cut into blanks.

Well, I spoke too soon. Wife just called and power has gone out. Hopefully short lived. Guess I better get home and stoke up the fire place. (I sure hope the wood bundles I pick up at the store don't have anything that looks like a good pen blank in them[:D])

Paul, your most likley on your way home and won't see this untill tomorrow, but hope your electricity comes on quickly, good luck.

man, you guys are going to have to get one of those old school, foot powered lathes if the electricity goes out for too long. the storm is headed toward us in the upper midwest, i think we'll get more snow than ice out of it... as dangerous and debilitating as ice storms are, they're equally beautiful and kinda fun to just hunker down in. be safe.

I am a little farther north and it iced up a little. We are suppose to catch the big ice tonight into tomorrow. My brother lives in OKC and lost his power last night. Was told that it could be 7 to 10 days before he got his power back. OG&E is bringing in something like 2000 crews to help out from other states. Estimated over 400,000 without power last I heard.

Chris you need to stop mixing up Oklahoma and Texas we don't have sagebrush and miles and miles of miles and miles. (West Texas)

Just a side note - I didn't know there were trees in Oklahoma.[:p]

Chris,
They not only got trees; they got freeze-dried pen blanks too.

Roy, I sure hope y'all keep your electric on and stay warm.
Paul, I hope you get your power back soon.

It's unfortunate to see that kind of damage, Roy, but if that's as bad as it gets, well, you know...

FWIW, I've seen my share of ice storms like this in the west Texas desert. Not often, but 4 or 5 times already in my life time. Let's see that could be every 11 years or so. Now what runs in 11 year cycles? Oh yeah, I remember... the solar cycle. Sorry, I used to teach science.[;)]

No ice here and they are calling for near 60 tomorrow. Freaky weather for sure.

Well our electricity went of at 0800 and came back on at about 2030. Lots of damage. Out at my dad's place there's a pecan tree that we grew up with and he lost it. The ice damage really reminds me of the tornado damage. It just rips the crap out of everything. We stayed at there place all day because we didn't have electricity and got to here limbs breaking all day long. It sounds like a gun fight when the higher up limbs break off because they take all the limbs below them off at the same time as they fall. Lots of poping when they break off. Here's some of my photos.

This is my dad's pecan tree. Sorry to see it go.

There's about 3/4 of an inch of ice on each side of the limb.

Freaky weather is right. We get our fair share of ice storms here in the mountains of NC but today it's supposed to hit 78. Go figure.
Stay safe you guys.

Good luck to all the people in the way of this ice storm. Saw in our paper where there have been quite a few deaths attributed to the storm. Hope you all are safe.

Hey Rick...83 here yesterday for a high, about 81 today. Supposed to be high of 45 Sat. If you don't like NC weather, just wait a minute, it'll change. A/C on Wed and heat on Friday. Where I live is always on the border between ice and rain or snow. 20 miles can make a big difference.

Hope everyone ok OK is safe and warm and has a supply...for medicinal purposes [:D]

Wow, this has just made the news in the UK. It actually looks pretty serious too. Several fatalities and masses without power. They said it was going to get worse too by the weekend.

Be careful you guys

Guys thanks for the concern as of now we are warm and comfy, our electricity was only off for a very short time, I haven't heard from Paul or Les here I hope they are OK. I drove to Lowes today about 4 miles and it looked like WWIII, tress down all over and some streets unpassible with tress laying in the middle of the road, tress on top of cars in the driveways, its a mess looks worse than the tornado of '02.

Roy, Paul, Les and anyone else in Oklahoma

Hey, keep the ice up there and don't let it come down here to Texas!

Seriously, heard about all the power outages and deaths this morning due to the storm. Wow, what a mess! You guys stay safe, warm, and inside the best you can. I've been through some bad ice storms in West Texas also, but not near as bad as yours.

I got my electric back yesterday, but the rest of the family is without. They've been over here all day today and probably will be throughout the night. What's sad is, we have our electricity, but the folks across the street do not. I feel bad turning on the Christmas light, but I'm hoping it might thaw out the gutters a little. Your right Roy, it's sad seeing all the trees tore up. I've basically lived in here all my life we've had two big tornados come through town and the trees look very similar to what a tornado does to them. I think it might look worse though because all the leaves are missing.

Glad you and the family are OK,trees can be replaced but pen turners and their families can't, just wish now to hear from Paul and Dustin up in Ponca City.
