I'm pretty sure it's from turning it down a bit and then polishing. Shows a good before and after effect.

That is correct. I usually turn down one end and polish it up to get the colors to come out to post on my site. It also fascinates my co-workers to see what evolves.
Most of the time, what is seen on the outside, doesn't represent what is on the inside.
