Hi every one I am ready to get into casting. I have my presser pot and PR. I all so made some molds from a cutting board. While a lot of help for yall. Now I am trying to find out about the colors. I have seen that grub 32 used powder coating powder from HF witch I got. But I am trying figure out can the pigment be oil, water, are does it have to be powder? I think I saw someone using make up for the pigment. I am trying to find things local.

Thanks for you help

I'm interested in the same thing. I have seen threads mention about it but I have never seen a comprehensive list of what works in PR and what doesn't. I think if it is water based it won't work in PR but I could be wrong.

I know that anything water based is not good for urethane resins I think PR is more forgiving, but not sure on that.I do know that moisture will cuase bubbles in urthanes.I use pigments I bought from the urethane dealer its a thick paste works great but hard to actually measure the amount you are using. This is my biggest issue as I move ahead on my casting journey(I'm looking to resell my castings so I need to be able to reproduce the formulas spot on).I also use mixol from woodcraft that work well and you can at least count the drops, but its much you need a lot more for the same result.I also use Pearlex but only as additives not colorants though they do add to it.Good luck,Victor

I have used liquid dye used for coloring wax for candles, it appears it be more concentrated then the casting craft dye making darker colors, I add pearl ex to make it opaque, I got the wax dye at Michale's, thy also have pearl ex in the stamping dept., I also have tried powdered tempera paint but I have not turned that blank yet, a good art supply store may carry pearl ex in individual colors, pearl ex's web site lists it distributors that is how I found a store near me the had the larger sizes.

For those of us who cast with Alumilite, liquids are a no no, you can, under pressure, use SOME liquid colorants but if you have too much it will either not set or foam up.
Alumilite sells dyes that will work with it, I use both,it and Pearlex...I have also used trans tint liquid, see above warning...

The best place to get pigments for coloring any kind of resin is www.coastalscents.com . The mica and mica pearl powders work great with all resins , it is a very fine powder used for making make up so it mixes easily (unlike powder coat powders) . Their prices are great , $3 to $5 for one oz of most of the powders they sell . One oz lasts a long time , you only need a little , about one dollop per oz (a dollop is a small pile on the end of a ice cream pop stick , about the size of a pinkie finger nail)

Hi Butch, is this regular make up if so man my wife has all most a store here:eek:

It's not like the makeup you buy in the store. It's the pigments that go into the makeup base. Not the same thing.

I will co-sign! The mica powders from coastalscents are amazing! I bought the sampler packs (the regular and the paradise set) and have yet to try a color i didn't like. The colors(when doing multi color pours) stay seperated nicely. I really cannot speak highly enough about their company and product.

The mica, as mentioned, is the color base for make up. The actualy finished product has lots of moisturizers, and talc and etc. etc. in it. These are pure mica.

They mix very well and easily, and the sampler packs will go a LONG way. I just finished my first gallon of PR and still have LOTS of mica.

No sorry , this is the stuff they make the "make up" from , once its made there are fillers and binders in the mix and you will never powder it fine enough to use for casting .
This company is a great company to deal with , they ship very quickly and their prices are great . I usually get my orders in a few days .

If you are looking for the larger pearlx, my Hobby Lobby has around 12 colors in the larger containers. I think they are around $4.50 per jar, but I always buy with one of their printable coupons so it ends up being under $3 per jar.

I keep a Color Library of many recipes, including
the dyes/pigments from ArtStuf, Perl-Ex, and Coastal Scents.

It's by no means exhaustive, but has hard data on how much pigment
you need to achieve a certain color and opacity as well as how much
catalyst to add and how quickly it'll gel at a certain temp.

I've got about 30 more recipes to add, including a bunch for Alumilite Resins/dyes.

As always, if anyone wants to contribute to the library they're welcome to.
