I dyed some wood..

This turned out like a used worn leather skin...

Here is a pic of the actual wood and the pen now that it's dyed.

It highlighted the grain nicely . Hope that`s what you were trying to achieve .

That was not caused by the dye. I actually burned the wood with a torch and that brought the grain out, then I dyed it.
