Well, after getting no response from a PM inquiring about Alumilite and casting, I dove in and got busy....

I took an idea from Curtis and made my MALE MOLDS out of Walmart cutting boards...

So far, so good....

Then I used Alumilte's High Strength 2 silicone rubber....

Hmmm, I think it came out pretty good!

First casting, Cholla!!

Then it was time to play around with multi colors and swirls, interesting..

I was able to find two Binks 2 gallon pressure pots on Craig's List for $60, and added about $40 worth of parts, pretty reasonable, I think.

I've been having fun casting my own blanks, hopefully Eric, you won't get too mad since I can make my own now. And Tom, if I ever find Gator Jaw close to me, I'll have to give it a shot. In the meantime, I'll keep buying your blanks from Ed and Dawn!!

I like the swirls on the finished pen you have in there. Looks like you have everything going pretty well. One thing I'm waiting to try is legitimate worthless wood casting. I have to FIND some good worthless project timber, but it'll be fun to play with. I've been told that Alumilite is ideal for that because it soaks into the wood and bonds much better than polyresin.

Ron,

I just looked back over my old PMs and noticed it was I who did not respond to your PM. I am sorry about that. I get a BUNCH of pms every day and sometimes overlook some. Looks like you did good, though!

Nice work! Now I am inspired. I too just ordered a Binks pressure pot from ebay (looks like you were the one who outbid me on the last one ).

I have the molds, Alumilite, tints, and am just waiting on the pot to be shipped. Keeping my fingers crossed that mine come out as good as yours.

However, I do have one question. I am planning on making wasted wood blanks. Is there any special preparation I need to do to the wood before casting?
Any advice would be much appreciated!

New adventures.....

I've really enjoyed experimenting with casting Alumilite, wish there was a color chart for mixing dyes though. This is the most recent cast, sweet gum ball. There is definately a difference in turning the clear. I really need a better picture taking set up!
