This past week I was commissioned to turn four fishing buts. This are for deep sea fishing poles. They area antiques and the customer wants new ones made from a sample he give me. He also supplied the wood. So I just have to turned. I figured about two days worth of work. Just do not know how to price. The customer use to have a turner until he passed away. This could begin more work into my shop. My hourly rate I fiqure would would be between 30 - 50 dollars. Which would be $480.00. Just need input.

Thanks for you help

I guess this is an example of, "The harder you work, the luckier you get." I would say figure out what your hourly rate is when turning your Constitutuion pens or other custom pen work and apply the same rate to this project.

Are you taking time away from your pen work to do this project? Shouldn't the price at least replace the cost of that time?

Are you asking for pricing advice? If you are, IMHO, it would be good if you provided more information. All I can envision are 4 fishing rod handles. Having made a few for my fly rods, I'm not understanding why it would take 2 days.
I will respectfully disagree with the previous post about replacing the cost for your time. You indicated this has the potential for a long term business relationship, which, I believe is something to cultivate.

Mark,
I don't think you can compare what we do for fly rods to what is done on deep sea rods. I had one of those once when I lived in San Diego and, IIRC, the wood handle was probably 15-18" long, and it wasn't just a straight or even slightly tapered cut. I remember that it had beads on it, but that's about all.

You are right it is 14" long. Back of the handle does tapered down. There are three beads in the middle and a bevel from the back of the hand where to taper starts to the middle portion of the handle. The wood is also hickory. I had forgotten how tough this wood can be. I have the first one almost done. It only took me an hour to get the basic profiles completed.

I want to thank everyone for there input. I am waiting for more material to come in for the pen project so I took this to keep the shop busy. This may lead to more work. I'll see at the end of the day if it is worth it. I had to buy an extension for my delta so now this opens up to more possibilities in the future. Once I am done then I will decide what the charge will be.
