Casting Hybrid burl process

I have some burls that would make some great hybrid blanks. My question is when making hybrid blanks would I need to stabilize the burl before casting it?

I don't think you have to but I do think when you do you get a better bond and overall blank.

If the burl is soft, punky, spalted, fragile, etc, you would benefit from stabilizing it. If the burl is very solid and stable you can probably get away without stabilizing, although some people feel they get a better bond with stabilized wood.

Most of the time there is no point stableizing the burl it will make no difference at all in my opinion

I look at stabilizing as insurance for the longevity of the pen. You may not have to do it, but the more stable the wood is the better. Punky wood has to be stabilized just so you can turn it. Stabilizing sound wood will get it closer to 1:1 expansion rates like the resin it will be attached to.

Getting ready to stabilize and cast my first blanks. So, it sounds like the answer is yes. Stabilize first. Kinda like "smoke 'em if ya got 'em"
