Hey ya'll. My name is Nathan Deal and I'm a recently added member to this amazing site as well as a beginning woodturner. I was referred here through a website because I'm searching out for an area near here that would possibly sell Myrtlewood for pens, kaleidoscopes, bowls, etc. I've found a couple websites in oregon that would ship to me but I would prefer to look at the grains of the wood before purchasing it. I am also looking at Lathes to purchase and right now looking at a Jet Model JWL-1220VS and a Rikon Model 1216 with a bed extension for it. I would like to know your thoughts on these products or if you have any other recommendations.

Welcome from SE OKlahoma. The Jet will give you plenty of power to turn more than pens but I have no experience with the Rikon.

Welcome Nathan, from far west Kentucky, to the addiction, sometimes referred to as the vortex. Be sure to give the library a good bit of time. The link is at the top of the page. You will find an article called Library Index. This covers tutorials on about anything pen making you can think of. You will also notice that there are articles listed by year. Much good info there as well. When these fail to answer your questions, by all means post it here. I have never seen one go unanswered very long. You might also want to give this thread a good look. It has some very good info for the beginning pen turner; http://content.penturners.org/library/general_reference/Getting_started_in_pen_turning.pdf. Grab some wood, make some shavings and have fun all the while being safe.

Thanks guys! I took a look at the delta and noticed that it says it has the ability to swing in both directions. What's the advantage to that?
