I have been searching without much success for directions on how to turn a ball or just a half round or so. I seem to recall that is was a parting tool that was rotated but that has not yielded good results so I must be missing something.

You might try utube I think I saw a guy turning one on their.
Also I don't know if you are a member of the (aaw)or not . If not get on their webb site and find a club in your area, most likely they will have a library or someone that can help.
I am in two aaw clubs and between them they can show me more than I can ever do.
Some of the guys have been turning 40 to 60 years.

If you are willing to turn a sphere (another name for a round object like a ball) out of wood

http://www.woodturningonline.com/Turning/Projects/spheres.html

This is a good tutorial

Dick Sing has instructions in one of his books, and David Springett has the super balls (chinese balls) stacked inside each other.

Hollowed ornaments are a close topic -- especially if your need is approximate shape of a hemisphere or sphere.

More???

I saw a jig someone made for turning spheres.

It is a banjo type jig that holds a tool and bolts to the bed. The idea is that the tool is attached to the rest and it only swivels around in circles (ie, a sphere). Once roughed out, the jig could make spheres pretty quick. I just can't find the link and don't remember how the jig was made. I do remember he had a cup chuck with a hose clamp like what is used to do eggs. He used it to clean up the ends.

I will keep looking.. seems like i remember he made the spheres for juggling balls.

I did look at a video on Ed Davidsons site which had a layout jig demoed by soren berger. Boy that guy can sure generate nice long unbroken shavings. Cool.
