So I did my first casting Saturday, using 1 gal of Simlar41 and some micas, thanks to the help on this site, and it was fun and came out nicely, but I could not help but spilling the PR. I was ready for the spill, so no problems there, but I hate wasting like that. How do you pour your PR into small cups without spilling?

Yup, pouring out of those cans is a PITA. I wish they would change to plastic jugs, but as not just any plastic jug would work, it's probably a cost thing.

I start with a large cup/container and pour appox what I will need (plus a little extra) in one pour, then split it into smaller cups.

I get the big cup right up to the opening before starting to pour to try to minimize spill, and have a paper towel handy for quick clean up.

Doesn't elimate the spill, but doing it only one time per session reduces the waste. I pour the extra back into the container.

I'd love to hear a better way.

I buy mine by the 5 gal bucket. I pour into a 16 oz cup, slowly and allowing it to run down the cups inside wall so to not make any more bubbles than I have too.

Pour with the opening up (so air enters the top of the opening). That way it will pour smoothly and slowly.

I transfer mine into plastic jugs that have a handle on top, and from there into the cups as needed. Seems redundant, but easier for me to handle. The plastic jugs are refillable as long as the resin doesn't set up in them!

Plastic milk containers work well. Just be sure to wash them out thouroughly, and then rinse with acetone to remove any residual water (polyester resin does not tolerate water well). You'll probably also want to tape the top on to keep leaks and fumes down.

I have friends in the fiberglass business who buy resin by the drum. Whenever I get a gallon from them (polyester resin or vinylester resin), they decant it into a milk jug.

I hope that helps,
Eric

I use a 2 inch roll of masking Tape to make my own spout.

Cut a piece of tape long enough to go all the way around the opening and make sure it is on there good.

Never had a problem with this application. and when you stand up the can of PR all the extra dribble goes in the can. When your done pull off the temporary spout and toss it.

Don't remove the metal seal that covers the spout. Instead, use a punch or a screwdriver and a hammer and make a hole in the seal near the edge.

I make mine pretty small because I usually pour one at a time in a 3 oz. paper cup but you can make it as big as you like.

Like Rick said... I punch holes in opposite corners of the can with a screwdriver. Duct tape covers the holes when not pouring.

I use one of these pumps from the set and it fits nicely on the gallon container from USComposites. I usually buy mine in a 5 gallon and transfer it to gallon containers so I do not have to keep opening the five gallon bucket. I have ran 15 gallons through the pump and have not had to clean it because they are made for resin.

a pump that fits the 1 gallon can would be great! these seem to only be sold in packs of 3 does each of them fit the 1 gallon can?

is the quart can from us composites the same size cap as the gallon with hopes that they would also fit that can size too?

i use this cheap one from tap plastics and simply leave it loose in the can which works ok but something that screwed into the can would be better..

i more for the pump it makes it easy to control how much you need.

although the biggest mess i made from pr was because of a leaky mold. made a mold from a cutting board, poured the pr in, didn't have a pressure pot yet seeing this would be my first try figured i could get away with it. Left it on my work bench and went up stair.
When i came back found the mold empty and resin on the top of the bench, down the leg and on the floor, didn't think a little resin cloud spread out that far.

That pump looks great. Do you leave it on the can, or do you have to remove it and store it somehow when not in use?

I leave it on the can when I am not using it. The resin does not get hard in it.

Unfortunately the other two pumps do not fit the gallon container. But for the price I did not mind to pay for the other two pumps. since it saved on resin and cleanup.

I do not know on the quart can.

I bought a drinking water dispenser from Wal Mart for $6. The recycle number on it is a 1. It is 1.5 gallon container with a valve in the front and a large opening to pour in the PR. There is a larger size I think 5 gallon. I have had A cup of PR in it testing for 2 days now and it seems to hold without dissolving.
When letting the PR out will need to open the top lid slightly to let the air in. I will put a picture in later.

With my pump after a few days of sitting it takes a little pressure pressing on it to 'unblock' it I
would be surprised if that gravity fed spout works after it's used a little bit please let us know

This sounded like a good idea so I bought one of these last week and dumped what was left from my can of Silmar 41 (about half a gallon).
Looked at it this morning and the Wally World container is getting soft so I have got to find something else QUICK!

Since there is no activator in it does it not stay liquid or how long does it take to harden? Could using a pump like the one for kerosene heaters work?

Never seen the stuff just askin
