Just get out your old trusty chainsaw and start ploughing though all the wood that you have been gathering, soon gets you sweating[:p], granted is is not as cold here, as many of you are encountering at the moment.

And this is the result of just cutting the logs in half, to give you a idea of size the 2 pieces in the bottom left are about 20-22" in length.

Mind you i had to work hard for most of this, it all came from trees brought down in the gales that we had over here a couple of weeks ago.

This is one that came down over a house and had to be lowered down carefully, so as not to crash down through the conservatory below.

This one actually came down whilst we were waiting for the electricity to be turned off as it had lights, cables in it. It just missed a new multi-million pound glass fronted building.[:0]

But as they say, its all in a days work. :D

Wow, I see lots of blanks Andrew, and some very pretty wood. Great pictures, was anyone hurt? BTW what ever happened with the fires you guys were having a few weeks ago?

That's just too coincidental. My day yesterday was similar to yours.
Not nearly as big a haul. Hope you don't mind if I piggy back on this
as it's on topic. [8D]
Y'all remember several years ago we had four big hurricanes in Florida. Francis and Jean came directly
over us and both were big, slow moving storm systems. Francis took 24 hours to get through and Jean wasn't much better.
Well, one of the trees along my driveway was snapped in half half way up, and has been hanging over the drive ever since -- the trunk was caught between its original trunk and the nearest tree while the canopy was nestled in a neighboring tree's branch. The most recent tornado that did so much damage to Lady Lake finally brought it down.

There is one nice thing about having a tree come down like:
it's spalted by the time you get it.

Andrew,
Nice wood gloat.. what is the wood with the nice pink colors? ... should make some nice pens and bowls..

Gary,
yours is interesting too.. nice spalting. What tree is that?

I won't show my new wood... already showed it earlier gloat.. picked up parts of an old maple that fell at the church where my artist association meets.. some of the pieces were 20 inces or more diameter... had to leave one piece, couldn't get it into the truck.. it was nearly 36 inches... looked like some burling and beginning to spalt as well. If it's still there in a couple of weeks, may try to get it when my son comes home.

Hopefully, my chain saw will start... haven't started it in nearly 5 months..

Chuck,
One of the other forums, prob'ly woodnet, had a picture of a 2X4 rigging used to
pick up huge pieces when no help is around. Basically, it's an adjustable ladder-rack wherein the wood carrier height is set to your tailgate.
Wood is rolled onto it, then lifted from one end and dumped into the truck.
The leverage makes unmoveable stuff moveable. [8D]

Becca, luckily we managed to get there in time to move everbody away and out of the buildings.
Chuck, the pink wood is Yew.
Steve, Anybody who doesn't pull there weight gets put through the chipper[:p], for some strange reason not many people want to work with us.[;)]

Gary,
I saw that rig... problem was, the piece is bigger than I can move to get onto the lift.. I used my 2 wheel dolly to move most of the other.. only one piece down the hill...just missed the wife when it rolled... fortunately it was a relatively small log.
I can back my little truck right up to the hill and with the tail gate down, it almost touches the ground... my step son is a big man and weighs close to 300 pounds... he should be able to help me move this.. if it's still there when he comes home, we're going after it... I've spoken with the church and they don't plan to move it any time soon.

Oh I don't know, everything that's arrived was correct [;)] excepting manufacturers mishaps. Just the same, it's gotten too cold to be comfortable in the shop these last few days. Sunday was as close to nice as it got.

Soon it'll be wonderful again and pens will be spinning.
