I bought some wood from someone here on the IAP that had a piece of wood that they marked Stormy Box Elder. It also had some curl to it, but I really liked it. I did a quick search on yahoo and didn't find much. So, I was wondering how rare it is or is it easily available. How about stormy & curly like the piece I had? I think I'd like to get some more.

Sounds kinda made up. My local mill does that all the time, they have maple, figured maple, extreme maple and superior maple !?!. Regardless, I've seen box elder do just about all that, especially in a burl or a crotch, and in a storm them tree's do like to fall over.

Les did that come from me??

Here are some photos so you can see the grayish color to the wood, hence the name stormy I suppose. It kind of reminds me of buckeye. There's no red color in it like you would see in flaming box elder.

Nolan,

I'm not sure if it did or not. It was in my box of burls and most of my burls have come from you, but I can't remember who sent it. I've had it for a while. I've added a picture with some writing on it so maybe you might recognize the writing. The marker is purple ink. I add the word stormy in black because I cut the one off in purple.

So what do you all think now? Is there such a thing as Stormy Box Elder.

Wow, really nice curl in that, and the staining is nice, too! 'Stormy', indeed! I've never heard any of it called that before, although the last big storm here dropped a big one in the yard. Does that count?

I've not seen that much dark spalting/mineral staining in much of mine, so I would think that is rare, considering my tree was pretty highly flamed and figured.

Nice finish on that, too. :)

Yap thats from me
