How long has it been since you did a days hard work. I spent 4 hours cutting trees today and getting the tops brushed out. I was dragging after four hours. We are taking about completely exhausted. That is only a half days work and I was worn out---came in soaked in the tub and took a 2 hour nap.

Frank ----I thought about you this morning----with a sharp chain on the saw I started busting that walnut burl up. I hope to get that done in the morning before I start back on the trees that are now ready to be cut into firewood. It's just about the right weather for this kind of fun---just above freezing---you don't stand around much -- if you keep working you can stay warm.

I worked outside for nearly 16 hours on Saturday - had to finish an irrigation system that took about 8-9 hrs longer than normal due to the fact that the yard was a giant wet clay pit. I am still a little sore :D

I hate hard work, I thought that retirement meant going fishing and camping all the time. I had more time for that before. Now it seems like I have no time for anything except doing chores around the house. I think I need to go back to work so I can get some rest. I just want to ask one question Gary. What is a Hophornbean tree?

Does hand digging 70 post holes count? That was 5 years ago.

Or planting 8 trees in our front yard? That was 4 years ago. (and you should see the weeping willow now)

Or building a 12x22 foot deck? That was 3 years ago.

Or spreading 5 pick-up loads of mulch? That was 2 years ago.

Or building a rock wall? That was last year.

I try to work at least one day each year. But that's all the work I do for the whole year. ;)

This year, I'll be planting more trees in memory of Lakota. Siberian Crab Apples and Russian Mulberrys.

My parents sold the apple orchard 7 yrs ago. I think that was the last time I did a full days worth of work. Man that was hard work. I miss it everyday.

I'm getting too old for all that hard work.. that's the reason I retired... now when I think about all that work, I get all re-tired again.

I know I'm getting soft... I took the chain saw to two big chunks of spalted maple yesterday... cost me about hours and half of labor and got some nice turning blanks out of it, but today, my back is so sore it's a chore to go from the bed to the sofa and to the kitchen for dinner.

Hophornbean is very VERY hard----most common use these days is making bows. The trees are very small maybe 4 to 5 inches and 20 foot tall---at least that's how they grow around here. When I get back out in the woods I will resaw some and post a pic.

I did a lot of land clearing for our church two years ago (and got paid well, which seemed silly since it was so fun to use a chainsaw and a skid-steer loader all day :D) and I came across several massive hophornbeam trees - 12"+ trunk diameter.

I also tried to cut a huge Sweet Gum burl from a tree but it was too big and the wood was too stringy... too bad! It is probably still there =)

Heck I guess the pic of Hophornbean can go with this tread---it works for me[8D]
