Our youth group at our church just went over to one of our elderly neighbors and cleaned up and raked their yard. Their was a big willow tree that fell down so we cut it up too. I got some of the figured stuff and I figured I'd make a bowl out of it. How does it turn? I know it's a little soft, but is it soft enough to make the tool chatter? I don't know, but I want to turn it ASAP. Thanks!:D[?]

Hey Jared,
I have some willow that I got from a neighbor.. it was pretty wet when I got it and the center of the tree had been eaten by wood ants... it's a little stringy and you have to have really sharp tools. I saw a couple of pieces that a fellow in Calif turned in willow and it looked pretty good. My only piece so far is pretty nice, but I have to rework it... I got the bottom too thin and because of the ants, have a couple of holes in the bottom.
I think the rule of thumb is: "Any free wood is good wood" :)

Edit: The smell was kinda sour.. boggy and swampy smell, even though the tree I got was sitting in the middle of his yard... when I was cutting it, my chain saw was throwing some water out of parts of it.

Jared,
Try to find one of Don Cook's videos... I think he has some on AAW website... he did a demo at the Woodcraft in Knoxville and showed how to use the bowl gouge. He says his technique is impossible to get a catch...can't say myself, I still get catches everytime I use a bowl gouge.. still working on that myself.

Shouldn't you be in school??:D:D
