Being new is overwhelming at times. I am completely addicted and am saving up for my next big order of kits and blanks. As I learn and see more I can't decide. Wood blanks, more wood blanks, then I start liking Acrylic, more wood, more acrylic, more kits, then I discover snakeskin (awesome), then carbon fiber (more awesome), then more wood and acrylic, then more kits, then I feel like I am getting a grasp on this.... more wood, more acrylic, then i find JohnU's pheasant PR (amazing), then I discover exoticblanks.com (need I say more)...

...anyway, as soon as I feel like I know what I want there's more! Which is great, but it's just another thing to have to decide on. LOL.

Man, I am completely sucked in!

Do what I did, start making your own to help support buying and trading with others. I remember reading here just after I joined about some people have more blanks than they will ever be able to turn. I laughed and dreamed. I now have a basement full of boards and blanks and my wife always asks me what I need more blanks for. I tell her, "you just never know". Love and embrace the madness!

It is indeed addictive.

I collect and trade blanks the same way I collected and traded baseball cards as a kid. I have a few blanks that I've aquired a few years ago, and still haven't done anything with them, but at least once a week I hold them in my hands and study them to determine the best kit to put them on...then I put them back into the "top shelf" labeled portion of the cabinet until next week when I do it all over again. Someday It'll be a pen, but until then...

I NO what you mean i sold off my nascar discast collection to get all my tool and kits, blanks ect.. and that was over 200 cars took me over a year to get rid of all of them. Now i have pens all over the place... LOL

Damn, Joe, I thought I was the only one who did that!! Seriously, I have more blanks than I want to confess to that I just look at rather than turn them.

Wheaties, once you turn your little heart out on a few slimlines and blanks, maybe buy a mixed pack of exotic blanks for slimlines, that way you may make say 50 slimlines all of different woods; that will give you an appreciation of the types of wood and how they look. Having done that, start looking for quality blanks, figured wood, some of the home made beauties available from private sellers on this site, and choose some higher end kits from the suppliers, and away you go!, then consider moving onto closed end pens, or kitless pens; don't rush, just enjoy every momemnt of the journey(including those dreaded blow outs and lousy finishes); Pens are just wonderful, but seems there seems to be an addiction develops after the FIRST one, good luck, Amos

That's the hard part... not rushing. I see everything everyone is doing here and want to jump in and be a part of it. I have been doing burls on Sierras as of lately. I couldn't make it to 50 Slimlines... only got to 9. LOL. But I am using my pile of Slimlines to "try out" different exotic woods, which I really like doing.

Don't under estimate the slimlines, they can be as difficult as any other kit to do right. They also lend themselves well to all kinds of modifications. I am always buying more blanks and making new blanks, last time my wife counted, she stopped at 1500 and hadn't even gotten into the shop yet....LOL I have more coming this week that are real cool though. I tend to buy about 50 of a cool type and then use a dozen and save the rest for.................

Wow, you guys really are nuts!

Glad I can be a part of it!

As Dario and many others can tell you (concerning my approach), some of us have a harder time with this than others. Those like me just bought everything that looked good. SWCTM still isn't over it and I haven't bought any blanks in two years... and I have enough to keep me turning for a decade or two. Yes, I did go a little crazy with it, but that's the way I seem to do things.

I solved the issue of how much money I spend on "Things" by making my own account. money gets added to it as my wife and I agree for it to be or from pen sales etc. but once it is in my account I spend it on what I choose to. she has no feeling about it one way or the other. works really well.
I do a lot of side work at times, work overtime, make money here and there in various ways. I get first dibs on any "Extra money" one thing that my wife has realized since I got my own account is how much of this Extra money I do not take. It sort of had a complete 180 degree effect on her attitude toward my hobbies.
I am looking at buying fishing licenses for my son and myself and making a fishing rod for him. total cost looks like it will be a couple hundred dollars. The only struggle I have is if I am willing to pay that much to do it. As far as the money is concerned my wife does not care. She is much more aware of how hard I have had to work to get that $200 and that I am welling to spend it on time with my child. Trust me the reaction is a lot different than being miffed that I spend so much money on stupid stuff.

Another suggestion for you all ...

NEVER, NEVER EVER, NEVER NEVER EVEN CONSIDER stopping at your Woodcraft store when you are coming home and have an empty trailer attached to your truck AND you just by chance have your checkbook or credit cards with you.

DON'T DO IT FOLKS ... and please DAMHIKT!
