I made this for my cousin. The barrel is spalted Tamerind, but I hit it with brown aniline dye to darken it just a little. The darker wood looks a little more appropriate to me, and added a bit more contrast throughout the blank. The top is a little proud of the hardware. I was trying to match it up with the clip, which was slightly larger than the end of the finial that meets up with the clip. I still think it looks pretty cool and I know she'll love it. It's got several layers of GluBoost medium on it, 2 layers of GlulBoost thin, then was wet-sanded/polished through the zona paper grits. This is one of the few themed kits that I liked as soon as I saw it.

Looks Great. I agree that darkening the wood a little helps to give it more contrast. Did you use alcohol based aniline dye? I have struggled to use the dyes, as they seem to come off during light sanding and finishing,

Like you I'm not generally a fan of the theme pens, but this one looks very nice. You did a great job!

I did use analine dye (Keda). I haven't used it many times yet, but have found that I have to pretty much turn down to the proper diameter before I dye. If sanding/smoothing takes it just a hair below the proper diameter after that, a couple coats of CA brings it right back up to size.
