Yea today is not the best of days. I was sharpening a roughing gouge and blew up my 100grit wheel :frown:

I also think I may have ruined the grinder as well:frown:

On top of this...I think I am starting to become allergic to cocobolo...developed a slight rash on my arms after I turned it, but I washed right after and it was gone...who knows. Either way...hope everyone's day is better than mine. Good thing is I am not hurt and I am not going to the hospital:redface::redface:

Yeah, I thought after a month away from it I could, with precautions, try turning cocobolo again. I now have a rash on the creases of my arm once again!

I guess it's just not meant to be!
Glad your not hurt! Was it a special wheel or a regular one?

p.s. My in-laws came by today so I kinda know how you feel

Had a friend that was drilling some Damascus Steel M3... his drill bit slipped and he ruined his blank this morning. ;(

I'm a little curious about the grinding wheel. Was it very old? Do these blow up very often? I'm fairly new at this and bits of grinding wheel flying through the air just doesn't sound very fun. So what are some lessons learned to keep me from experiencing flying 100 grit?

I am still happy with Easter but listen to this. Yesterday we sold a 2000 Astro Van to a young couple with four kids. They dug up the $2,800.00 and picked it up Saturday. This is after they took ir for a long test drive Friday night. After the transaction was complete and three hours later they call and said the oil pressure dropped to zero and there is a "clunking" sound in the engine. The car ran fine before this. Mary even went to see the kids last week without our even having a little concern about the van (it has 180,000 miles on the chassis, 70,000 on a rebuilt motor and 5,000 on a rebuilt tranny). What would you do? We needed to pay off some medical bills with that money.
We gave the kids back their money. We now cannot pay off the bills and there is a good possibility that the van is toast. If it is the engine, it goes to the junk yard.
The good side is that it did not break down when Mary was driving through Houston, and the buyers did not buy a car that would fail them when they had their family inside.

Zero oil pressure and clunking are not a good thing. Very nice to not just say to them tough luck.

Wow John, that was mighty nice of you. Really sucks to hear about the van and your bills though. Good luck!

Hturnings - I am not sure about the age of the wheel. My folks gave it to me. It was a good wheel, Norton White 100grit.

well sorry everyone is having such tough times...Don gave me a good outlook. I get to go shopping tomorrow:biggrin::biggrin:

Unfortunately it's not like you or I can just go to the local store and find a white wheel. :frown:

I am enough of a weekend mechanic to know that you are right. These are not good signs or sounds. Sounds like the oil pick up tube fell off. It has a darned good transmission, one that could go into a 1/2 ton pick up.

Have had a wonderful weekend..Wife and I went fishing in our lake and caught so many blue gill there was no way we could have kept them all. So we gave them to a friend. Today we have been having a wonderful day. Tomorrow though is when the bad hits. Have to have a MRI to see why I have ringing in my ear. Dr thinks I have a mass or "growth" on the nerve and has to make sure. So the waiting game begins. But we are staying positive! :-D

Dan,
Glad you didn't get hurt. Those wheels can do some real damage!

On that rash: if it gets really itchy, do this:

Set your tap water hot enough to just be uncomfortable. Then run your rash under this hot water. At first it will itch like crazy, but then you will notice the itch will go away. What it is doing is driving the histimines out of the rash, and you will have relief for about 5-8 hours. Found this on the Mayo Clinic website, and since I just am getting over poison oak, I know it works!!

Didn't know about that one, thanks for the info chip. Right now (about 5 hours late) I still don't have a rash since I washed it off, so I think I may be good for now.

As for the damned wheel, I have a small injury got 2 small scratched on my right hand. Looks like the cat got mad at me.
