I've just received a few hobby knife kits, which I've not made before.
I'm looking at the hardware, the knife tip end has a knurled ring below the sleeve that holds the blade secure. All the pictures show the blank extending all the way to the sleeve, so going over the knurled ring. This knurled ring is the same diameter as the inside of the supplied tube, but I suppose it could be pressed in with brute force. There's not a lot of blank thickness at that end and I'd fear it cracking. Any advice? Thank you in advance!

Are you talking about the PSI hobby knife that John notes above, or the one from Bullseye Turning Supply (@KateHarrow)?

Based on the comment about the knurled part, I think you must be referring to the one from Bullseye. If so, yes, it is a tight fit and can crack your blank, don't ask me how I know (groan). I recommend making sure that the end of the but is not constricted from cutting and would even file it a little bit to make sure that it isn't. If it is the Bullseye kit that knurled part is aluminum so softer than most press in components.

Yes, I got the kits from Bullseye. Thank you for the advice.

Bullseye Turning Supply sells bushings for the utility knife kit and as mentioned, has the instructions for the kit (the picture currently on her site for this kit is one I made). If you don't get theirs, you can also get the Little Giant bushings from the TBC Bushings website (those are what I use).

For the utility knife, you don't have to use a copper tube for it (I do not). So you get a blank long enough that you want to use and then drill a whole all the way through. Cut to get it down to the final length you want then mount it between centers on the lathe. Turn it to your desired shape and then assemble. You can use a press to assemble the kit but be mindful not to over press the pieces to avoid cracking or breaking.

Reach out to Kate and her staff at Bullseye if you have any issues, they are really friendly and happy to help or answer questions.
