Will be taking some much needed time off from work next week and headed to North Carolina to look at light houses. Also interested in any good woodworking/lumber stores in the area or other sites of interest along the coast. This will be the first visit to the Carolina coast so any information would be greatly appreciated.

Well, if you're going to Cape Lookout and you're interested in things nautical, you might consider swinging by the Maritime Museum in Beaufort. The museum has (or at least, had) a lighthouse exhibit (including a real fresnel lens). On the other side of the street, they acutally build wood boats, and you can watch to see how its done.

Eric

If you like seafood, you don't want to miss Calabash, North Carolina. A lot of the "Low Country" seafood mimics the Calabash style, but no others really come close. In Calabash, a tiny town near Wilmington, the seafood you eat for dinner usually came off the boats that afternoon.

If it is golf you are after, some of America's finest golf courses are about an hour from Calabash, in North Myrtle Beach, SC.

As a part-time low country resident, I'm not supposed to speak of Calabash, Murriels inlet, or North Myrtle Beach golf to tourists. You folks as the IAP are family and deserve to know how great this area really is. Myrtle Beach IS touristy, but Calabash, NC and North Myrtle are wonderful

Bobby, I'm heading out to do the same thing tomorrow (7/1). I hope there are some light houses on the golf courses.

Harbor Towne golf course (a PGA course) on Hilton Head island in SC is lovely. It had a light house. I haven't played thar course in years, but it was great. Hudson's seafood, right there at harbor towne had great seafood, too.

I don't think it is possible to get from LA to NC without going through Atlanta.
If you do go through Altanta, DO NOT ARRIVE here during morning or afternoon rush hour as our traffic is worse than Los Angles.

In Atlanta, Highland Hardware and Woodworking is worth the visit. In the Atlanta "metro" area , there is Woodcraft, several hf, Northern tool and others.

Thanks

Thanks for the info, it's greatly appreciated. I will post some pictures when I can and Highland hardware is on my list of to-do things, but now I just have to sweet talk the boss. Her list is geared more toward visiting the wineries in NC, along with the lighthouses.

Wishing everyone a safe and happy Fourth of July.

The better half will LOVE Virginia Highlands area right around Highland Hardware. It is a GREAT piece of the Old South! You may not be able to tear her away from the shops around that area. If you arrive around lunch time, don't miss Mary Mac's Tea Room on Ponce De Leon. It is an Atlanta ledgend since WWII!
