I am a newbie at penturning; got hooked at a Woodcraft store "Turning Pens for Vets" demo in Jacksonville, Florida. Currently trying to gain experience turning on a Shopsmith. It does decent job, hopefully will improve if my skill improves. Haven't sold any pens yet as I don't feel the quality is up to what I see on this site. I spend way too much time on the internet researching pen turning and woodworking. If I can ever translate knowledge into ability it would be amazing.. maybe an old dog can learn new tricks!:)

Welcome! I've turned close to a couple hundred pens on my shopsmith now. Using a mandrel, they do as good a job as a dedicated lathe. As you gain proficiency and experience, you may some day want to try turning between centers (TBC), which isn't as easy for the SS, because I've not seen any mention of adapters to do so on them. But someone could chime in and let us know that's possible too.

At any rate, enjoy your pen-turning! It's a lot of fun!
And welcome to the IAP site and forums!

Welcome from Southern Indiana. May you have many good turns in life!
