I am a new turner. So far I have made about 30 pens as gifts for family and friends.

One thing I am trying to find is how to put a spiral on a pen. I have been trying to do this by manually turning the lathe and using a small rasp to create the spiral after turning the pen.

Any one have a better way?

There are a few spiraling tools out there I've seen but never used them. Has anyone used any of them other than the wizard tool?

If you want to do it all by hand, take piano wire (the one with ridges) and wrap 2 or 3 times around the barrel with the spacing you want. (I mounted my blank in a my lathe) Then using a back and forth motion saw the wire into the blank, turn the blank and that will move the wire foreward. Then you take a small rat tail file and clean up the groves. Takes a while but it works, also helps with a 2nd pair of hands to manually turn the blank while you are "sawing"
