Hello All,

I'm Neil from Bloomington, IN and have been turning pens for about 6 months.
I joined the site to hone my craft! I just completed my first antler pen and really enjoyed the process. I currently use HSS tools, but I'm looking for direction on carbide options. I'm leaning towards the Easy Wood Tools pen turner with Ci1 R2 insert, but would like to hear from everyone on their recommendations.

Thanks and look forward to learning a lot!

Welcome from Nashville, TN.
I would definitely go with the Easy Wood Tools. Turned many with HSS, but got tired of sharpening them every day. Now they are just stubs.
I have been using the Easy Tools for some time now. They're great.

Welcome from Texas
I use the EWT Easy Start Rougher with an R2 insert almost exclusively for my pens.
I use my HSS tools for other things, but I prefer the R2 tool for pens.
Everyone has their own preferences though - try both and see what works best for you.

Welcome from Southern California! I think I have that EWT tool and it's great, especially for material where my skew is problematic.

Neil, if you would like to discuss this topic with folks in Indiana who are penmakers, join us for the spring meeting of the Indy chapter of IAP. Check out the details under the Indianapolis caption in Local Chapters. As for my personal preference, I like sharpening so I use the HHS tools. I have a set of the carbide tools that I made and use them occasionally but find that they are just not as sharp as I like. There are YouTube videos on how to make you own carbide tools and it really is pretty simple. You can make an R2 or R4 tool for about $10 and an hour of time, I've made a bunch for folks and for me.

Welcome from Ohio....

Well, I use both Carbide and HSS... I'm not great at any yet, so the jury i still out. Both have their applications, so I'm fine with not having a preference yet.

My predicition.. I'll center on my HSS, and sharpen my own.

I'm an IU graduate in 1986 (MS), wife in 1987 (PhD). Worked at CPC Valle Vista; New Castle State Hospital; and Bradford Woods.. Loved the Hoosier State!!!

Hope to meet you. Mark

Welcome Neil, I'm just a little north of you in Indy. You should attend the Indy Chapter meeting, this will be my first chapter meeting as well. Lots of good turners in the area to learn from.

Go Hoosiers! - too bad they just lost to Purdue :(
