In case you are interested, Step 1 was the Impeller upgrade and can be seen HERE.

Step 2 was to build a Thein Baffle in a 35 gallon Brute Trash can and invert the blower above the trash can with a direct connection to the filter collar. You can see the end result in these photos but evidently I did not document the process as intended.

Vertical, top mounted blower hooked directly to collector collar.

Step 3 I finally got around to this week and that was adding the Wynn Filter. Super simple process and by far the easiest upgrade. It was also the most expensive at $225.

Note: shake down the bag filter before removing it if you do not want a bunch of fine dust all over you. If you want a bunch of fine dust to suck up to try the new mod out, don't worry about it.

The end result. Noise dropped by 3db to 93 db at 3 feet and 87 db at 6 feet.

I wish I had previously taken amperage readings on the blower motor. It is now working much less. Previously the dust filter bag and the dust collection bag were stretched skin tight with and open 4" hose 6 feet long. Now, with something like 600 percent more surface area on the exhaust, the collection bag still swirls the fine dust nicely and is inflated but is quite relaxed.

Nice! I just ordered one of those DC units last weekend. There was a 20% off, no exclusions coupon, so heck yeah. They were just taking pre-orders since they were out of stock, but let me use the coupon for that. It's supposed to move 1550 CFM right out of the box, which is a big upgrade over my 650 to begin with, but this is definitely something I'll be considering in the future. The 5 micron bag will need an upgrade ASAP, though.

I have been using the same filter in a Jet modified 1100. I added an Omega Super Dust deputy to the setup, removed the Jet cyclone ring, and added a 20 gal pail for the final dust. Works pretty nicely. I highly recommend the Wynn filters - and if you do a modified setup, try his filter clamps out - they work well - you can see them in the pics on the plywood filter top attached to construction angle braces.

Thanks, Chuck. Very interesting. Looks like a 10db drop is achievable. That's huge!

I did notice a bit of db drop Mike. What I really noticed is that I'm not blowing my nose as much as before the filter and I'm not as congested as prior to the filter. BIG PLUS, Dick at Wynn Environmental is a great guy to work with. Answered all my questions and was a big help. Another big plus, probably took me 15 minutes from the opening of the box to get it all put together.

I am curious, if instead of styroam lining, if sound proofing egg-crate foam might help dampen the noise even more?

My first thought for noise reduction would be a rock wool type insulation. It has great sound dampening properties. The black ahh crate foam could work well, also. One of the companies that supplies it used to have a selector based on the type of noise/sound you were working with. The rigid or styrofoam would not not be high on my list, but he still got nearly a 10db reduction.
