I just found this site a week back and I'm so glad I did. I'm new to pen turning and I'm overwhelm by the amount of info that is here and also the skill level of the turners here! I have been in woodworking all my life since my father had a cabinet shop while I was growing up. I worked professionally in that shop a number of years before entering ministry. I have been a full time Pulpit minister for the past 14 years and have been without a congregation and employment for a year now. I have always been fascinated with turned object especially bowls and that's what got me into turning. I bought a jet 14/42 to learn to turn bowls. I had a serious accident with an exploding bowl and I had to have surgery to place a titanium plate under my eye and came close to losing my eye. Because of this I was scared of my lathe for several years, so I didn't turn anything. Recently though I wanted to turn again and thought I'd try pen turning and work up my courage again to turn other things and have been having fun. Only ten pens so far but more to come! Don't know if I'll post much but will read a lot! Glad I found this site and all of you pen turners and wood enthusiast. Thanks

Hello from a little further south

Welcome to a fabulous site and hobby. Sorry to hear of your bad
experience.! Pen turning may just be your forte! There is a small group of pen turners that gets together occasionally in the Little Rock area & a group of woodturners that gets together monthly in the Texarkana area. You can go to forums and find Central Arkansas Chapter there. If you are interested in the Texarkana group (Ark-La-Tex) holler back at me & I will get you some additional info. S.W.A.T. has a symposium in Waco next
August that I would highly recommend to anyone...:cowboy:

Hi Larry, welcome from Texas! Thanks for sharing your story. Your woodworking skills will be a big asset in pen making and you will likely improve quickly. The big birthday bash is coming up in about a month, so don't show your best work until then - but be ready with some good photos since you are eligible for the beginners category this one time. It is a great way to start showing your work and you might win a cool prize!

Harry

Welcome aboard!!!!

I know it might be a bit of a drive, but we have Chapter Meetings in the Little Rock area about once every three months...sure would like to meet ya!

Welcome to IAP. You are close to two woodturning clubs that meet once a month. There is one in Texarkana and one in Broken Bow ,OK. If you want info on either of them send me your e-mail and I will get you on their e-mail list.

Thanks everybody for the warm welcome. I made and posted my pen press in the jig, shop forum area so check it out. Hopefully my pen kits will be in soon and I'll post pictures of pens. I'm going to make a copy of the wolverine jig for sharpening my turning tools hopefully soon too. It's fun to get interested in turning again.
