I was turning male species Cocobolo wood blank to cylindrical form on my lathe to make a wine stopper, stopped the lathe, and saw him looking at me. I think an Ent from the Lord of the Rings has come to roost. Yikes!!!

Dimensions: h = 2.25", dia = 1.5" with 3/8" threaded hole in the bottom.

Male species you ask? The eyes in this piece of Dalbergia retusa initially struck me as being a "he" when I first set eyes upon it. So, that's what he is until I possibly turn further and discover otherwise.

What should I do with him?
Thanks for any suggestions.

Call it, "Eyes of Christ", list it on eBay and hope someone will bid several thousand!

If you decrease the diameter there at the eyes at all, you will lose the eyes very quickly. I would think about possibly making it into a Christmas ornament, like a snowman with an ebony or walnut top hat. something like that would preserve the "face" and you won't really lose any details below the "chin". Another possibility might be the finial on a cane, or possibly a hiking staff? In any case, definitely find something to use the face, it's too cool to turn away for just another bottle stopper.

Identity theft!!!! You Stole My Pic from the "What do you look like thread"!

I'd be tempted to stop, drill the center out, insert a dowel and a silicone bottle stoper. Then you could carve some wavy hair on the top and sides.

I'd turn some kind of a base for it out of a contrasting wood, join the two together and put it somewhere every person who enters into the room has to take a look at it, and then enjoy the reactions when they realize they are being stared at! *grin*

I know, I'm weird! *LOL*

For the short term, I'll more than likely shelve this turning until I decide best use for the piece. I appreciate the humor, ideas, and will heed warnings regarding further turning, especially in the area of the eyes. If it's ever turned to some completed form, there will be no more than a mere touch of very fine sandpaper to the eyes and then an application of some type of finish.

It would be truly interesting to auction the piece on eBay to see what it would bring with respect to bids, but for now the Ent is going nowhere -- it's a great conversation piece and too unique to part with at this time -- the Ent is in control!

Personally, I wonder what the probability is of turning a 1.5" x 1.5" x 2.5" block of wood and having eyes appear in the manner that they did -- it's just too odd! Any experts in probability and statistics out there?
Or maybe a better question would be: has anyone else encountered anything comparable to this while turning?
