This is the ice cream paddle kit from rockler, but the old version that you have to glue in because it isn't threaded. Not a fan of that style but when I looked at it online it looks like the new version is much better. Oh well!

That's an awesome and very interesting looking handle. I've wanted to make one of these but wondered how strong they are and how far the metal goes into the handle. I've bent plenty of large spoons scooping frozen ice cream. I guess I could look at the instructions and see how long internals are. Anybody ever break one of these?

So I have a large piece of hemp waiting for me to turn that another IAP member very graciously gave me. Does applying the finish make it turn brown like this or did you put stain/dye on it? It's really neat to look at.

This piece was dye stabilized orange by my shop - honestly stabilizing is 1000% recommended for HempWood turning. It's fine raw for flat work but stabilizing helps tons for turning. i finished it with a friction polish

I haven't had any issues with strength but like I said I think any of them with a threaded insert are better quality than ones that need to be permanently glued in

...."1000% recommended".... Ha!

I have heard some choice comments about turning hemp from a couple people. Thanks for the guidance on getting the color and how you finished it.

I'm very confident in our stabilized hemp - so much so that I offer a replacement if you blow it up. People who struggle with it tend to either try turning it raw or treat it like a typical hardwood. It's thousands of fibers pressed together, so it acts like a combination of wood and fordite

Those hempwood blanks are something else. So much detail! Its like a burl in some ways. I cut down some vines in my yard last year. Trumpetvine, they were not doing well, and never flowered in my yard (but always flowered in my neighbors yard where they grew over our fence!) I was going to toss all the medium sized viney branches, but, maybe its worth trying to make some blanks out of them...

Absolutely stunning! Do you use Cactus Juice for your stabilizing, or something else?

I've seen kits in-store at both Rockler and Woodcraft. Both are stainless steel and look very sturdy. I eat too much ice cream, just ask my belt. I'm new here and to turning so have not actually made one of these kits. That said I have gone through a lot of ice cream scoops and my advice is always look for "stainless steel", avoid any that mechanical monstrosity that is suppose to release the ice cream from the scoop, and absolutely avoid any that say "chrome." Chrome plating bubbles and chips, more so if you use a dishwasher, and though I don't know for sure, I can't imagine eating chrome plating flakes is good for your health.
