I need help to figure out what some threaded holes are in my Italian made 30" band saw. What is the best way to do this i have seen these thread gauges are these what i need? And if so anyone know a cheap place to get them???I need to make a traversing log sled that I can use to cut lumber on my 30"er.Oh any ideas on building the table would be great as well. Thanks,Victor

Depending on the size of the hole your trying to figure out a thread gauge may not fit in there. the cheapest way would be to find an american threaded bolt close enough in size and then go to the hardware store and select a couple of short cheap bolts/machine screws to see which one fits. Then you can always return them and get the ones you need. Depending on what your time is worth. Thats if you cant take an existing bolt off the machine thats the right size and take it in to be matched.

For many of the common sizes Rocker has a set of metric thread jigs -- male and female threads for $10-12 -- there is also a thread checker plate that has many of the common sizes for a few buck more.

Victor, The easiest way is to remove a different screw of the same approximate size and see if it fits in the hole you need. Take the screw to the big borg store. They have a guide plate that will tell you the size and thread. A thread gauge and bolt size is a good idea, but works best on the bolt, not on a threaded hole. A metric tap can also be used to <gently> check the thread.

There are only a limited number of standard pitches for metric screws. These are the most likely sizes:

M6 x 1.0 M6 x .75
M8 x 1.25 M8 x 1.00
M10 x 1.50 M10 x 1.25 M10 x 1.00

If you have a set of transfer punches, see which one will fit into the screw hole.
