Do any of you TX penturners have any suggestions for a whitetail hunting ranch?
My brother has wanted to go on one of these hunts all his life, so I decided that this year I am gonna try to make it happen for him.
I have looked at 40 gazillion websites, and emailed a few for specific questions. The truth I would rather go to one recomended by someone with that experience. It will take me all year, saving and working overtime to pay for this, so I definately don't want to get there expecting what I saw on a website and be dissapointed. I will be going along, but not hunting. Hey, maybe I will be close enough to some of you that we can meet up for lunch, or even turn a pen or two.

I have heard great things about the 777 ranch. I have a few cousins that have been there and have not had any complaints. Only hear positives. I will warn you, which I am sure you already know. Any Texas Ranch deer hunt is EXPENSIVE. Most of the time you pay for how the animal scores. Some you have to pay for processing and ect...

Keep in mind that when your animal is scored it is being scored "green". As it dry's it is going to shrink and your 200 score may become a 170 real fast.

I have not been to texas personally. I prefer up north where the deer a larger. Yes Texas produces great antlers in the right conditions, but the animal may only way 100 pounds or less (some bigger). Good luck with whatever you decide. I have a website at home (I think) that is a place where all the top ranches are rated and reviewed by previous customers. I will send it to you if I find it.

I think that is a wonderful gift you are giving your brother, he will no doubt think he has died and gone to heaven.

Though I am not into hunting of any kind I seem to have no issues eating flesh. Funny eh?

While I don't have any specific recommendations - I didn't even know what whitetail huting was until I read the second post - I can tell you that up here in Canada we have many deer hunting places. I would also add that a lot of the deer hunting up here seems to be in the bush.

On the island that I live it's common to run into a minimum of 10 deer and fawns just going to the store and back. Unfortunately for some, we only allow the bow & arrow - to give the deer a sporting chance.

I don't have a clue when deer season is, but I know a bunch of guys who go deer hunting each year. If it suits, I can always ask if they will take an 'outsider' with them...(someone who doesn't live on the island and know their drunken ways!)

Thanks Dustin, I would appreciate that. Yeah, it is expensive, most of the ones I have looked at so far is around $3000 for a three day hunt. That's one(1) buck 8 or 9 points, up to $750 per point if you kill one bigger. Then you have a $307 non resident hunting license, guide fees, processing fees, gratuities.... it's going to be tough, but I think it will be worth it. HEY,ANYBODY WANT TO BUY A HAND MADE WOOD PEN?:)

Ruth, even though he would love to hunt in Canada (and so would I), I think we better stay a little closer to home.:( Thanks for the offer though.

I agree with Dustin. I live in Texas and used to be an avid hunter at many different locations throughout Texas. The 777 ranch would probably be one of the better ones for a first time trophy hunt. Yes, you can increase your chances for a high ranking B & C deer but it would be more expensive! I would try the 777 ranch first for your brother.

I didn't know a hunt cost that much. I have a friend who offered me free hunting (but I haven't taken it) on her 400 acre ranch in Dripping Springs (close to Austin). She just sold the property mid last year!!!

I just checked out the 777 but their prices seem alot higher than some of the others that I have been looking into.(which may be nessisary) Does anyone have any experience with the Raggedy Creek Ranch in Crowell,TX?
