Hello, I posted back a while ago about my IE acting up so I never really fixed it just started running FireFox. Well funny thing happens, my Fire Fox will not work unless I turn off the firewall, But now my IE works again. I wonder did the Hi-jack software from the printer that caused all this in the first place maybe expire and stop trying to access my computer. My question is this is my Norton Anti-Virus really doing much I have heard bad things abour it and wonder can i just turn it off and run the FireFox with having to worry???????????? Thanks, Victor

A firewall's a very important thing to have, but I only run my antivirus occasionally anyway, so I often turn off the antivirus if it's slowing me down or impeding something. Norton's a beast of an antivirus too - takes a lot of memory to run those brand-name ones. I used to use CA antivirus (perfect for a penturner), but I'm in a bit of a finacial crunch lately, so I switched to AVG, a free antivirus. It works just fine, and doesn't get in my way.

I NEVER turn off the firewall though.

I'm not all that big a fan of Microsoft, so I run Firefox and got rid of Internet Exploder. I still use Outlook for E-Mail on my main computer, but on my laptop I went to Thunderbird. I have had no problems with either Firefox or Thunderbird.

We used to use Norton for anti-virus, but it became so bloated and intrusive that we finally got rid of it, and went to AVG Free. It works great, and is free! Did I mention it is free? [8D]

Think about it!

Scott.

I also use Firefox exclusively. Have been for several years now. I still have IE on my computer, but only use it to check to see if a web page I put together looks fine in IE. I don't have Outlook installed, use Thunderbird only, it has much better spam filters.

As far as Norton getting in the way. A access warning may of popped up and when you click it, you inadvertently block internet access for Firefox. It isn't hard to fix, do a quick search at Symantec's website for your version about unblocking an application.

If you are running XP, check to see if the built-in firewall is turned on (it usually is by default). Sometimes XP's firewall will conflict with another firewall. I had problems with it running concurrently with ZoneAlarm, so I turned off the XP firewall and run ZA only. No problems since.

Cheers.

I'm with Scott, get rid of Norton. If you could see how much system overhead Norton requires, you would be absolutely stunned. I've tried MacAfee and it's just as bad. AVG is much better.

If I remember correctly, if you read more about installing Firefox it recommends that you turn your XP firewall off. I use F-Secure and it works great with Firefox.

Exactly what I do.

Norton with all it's overhead will slow down even the fastest computer.

Norton causes more problems with computers, at one time it (Norton) was a very good program and the business software is good but the home verson is pure grabage, but have fun trying to get rid of it on your harddrive.

We had used Norton for years. Both at home and at the hardware store. But over the past couple of years Norton was causing problems on all of our computers ans all of them were having errors come up when you turned the computers off. Some ccapp file or something like that. We switched to Windows One Care and have been happy ever since. Even though I am not a Microsoft fan, you have to admit that a Microsoft product whould most likely be nicer on the registry. Also we have not had the computer slowdown like we did with Norton.

Really simple to remove Norton from your hard drive

Believe it or not I have had the same problems with Norton over this side of the pond. I switched it off after advice from a UKAP member and I have installed 'AVAST' which gives me protection and has taken all the NORTON problems away.
