Hi! My is name is Alfred Amos and I live in Bassett, Va. I happened upon this great site while researching pen turning. I had been curious as to how this was done for a good while. I was at a flea market a while back and a guy had his pens displayed there. I bought one and became more curious. I then found out about a WoodCraft store in Roanoke, Va. (about 50 miles away) and headed out to get materials to get started. I already had a lathe but hadn't done any woodworking in years.

Any way, I've made about 15 pens now and I'm looking forward to learning a lot from all the fine people here. I'm amazed at the great work displayed on this site!

Welcome Alfred, from far west Kentucky, to the addiction, sometimes referred to as the vortex. Be sure to give the library a good bit of time. The link is at the top of the page. You will find an article called Library Index. This covers tutorials on about anything pen making you can think of. You will also notice that there are articles listed by year. Much good info there as well. When these fail to answer your questions, by all means post it here. I have never seen one go unanswered very long. You might also want to give this thread a good look. It has some very good info for the beginning pen turner; http://content.penturners.org/library/general_reference/Getting_started_in_pen_turning.pdf. Grab some wood, make some shavings and have fun all the while being safe.
Ed4copies just posted 8 videos showing pen turning from start to finish. Look them up and they may be of some help for you.

welcome to the vortex. i am on the other side of the state, in the Norfolk, Portsmouth area. several of us down this way. if you happen in the neighborhood, drop any of us a line, we would love to try to get up with you. by the way, we have a rule here on IAP, no pics, didn't happen. so you see, until we see a pic of a pen, you have not made any.
welcome and good luck. this place is like an encyclopedia of pen turning solutions, and problems.

My pen making is just "OK" for a beginner but my picture taking is just plain "lousy"!
