Hello everyone, the names Neil. I'm 20 years old and I'm addicted to lathe turnings! I own a small pen shop in upstate NY and I'm trying to bump my skill up with the big leagues. I'm here to learn the do's and don'ts of turning. I'll return the favor with my welding and fabrication experience if need :)

Thanks and can't wait to share "BS" stories with you all!

Hey Neil, I'm new here too, totally without experience as a turner. I'm close to you, though, in the Canton area. Next time I'm at the Cape, I'll look up your pen shop. Maybe I'll be able to learn something new! If you ever need laser work done, contact me.

cheers, dee

Welcome. Nice to see some new New Yorkers (that really mean upstate when they say it). If you ever lower yourself and come a little south (but still north of Syracuse) contact me and maybe we'll be able to connect and I'll show you the trouble I'm usually in. Bob I.

Thanks Dee, right now my shop is just an old 200yr old grainery on my parents farm that I'm restoring into a turning shop. I used to live in Alaska and my father and I owned the "Alaska Woodwright Shop". He has little time to turn so I'm taking the task on by myself. As for the laser work, I'll keep in touch with you.

Thanks everyone I'm glad to meet you all!

Welcome Neil. Glad to have you here and looking forward to seeing some of your work.

I'm putting a few links in here for reference –
This link has postings by different pen turners on what they wish they had known earlier:
http://www.penturners.org/forum/showthread.php?t=46654

This link tells of some "out of the box" tools/aids for pen turners http://www.penturners.org/forum/showthread.php?t=66178

This one is a PDF on the acronyms used here. I am sure you know many but this will help with those you don't. http://content.penturners.org/articl...9/Acronyms.pdf

Welcome Neil. It's nice to see the upstate NY group growing. I also see Dee in this thread. Sorry Dee, I missed your introduction.

I'm near Rochester, just off the Thruway, if you are ever over this way.
