Hello all,
I have been turning pens for a couple years off and on. I can say I am addicted and have enjoyed figuring out this crazy hobby. I first started turning anything but wood, but have changed and really have only been turning wood or a combination type blank for the last year.
I was looking for ideas and new materials so I did some searches and came across IAP and have had many of my problems answered just by looking over what others have posted. I owe thanks to several of you as my pens have really improved thanks to the tips posted here.
I have started a project with my 8 year old son for school called woods of the United States and may call on a few for some help in the future. We are gathering wood cut from every state and turning a simple slimline pen. This is a great project, but getting wood from every state is a challenge so in the future I may post an add looking for some wood cut from your state I will work out some trades or something. It sounded like a great idea at the start, but it is turning into a bit of work. The good news is my son is learning about the different woods, States, and is learning some shop skills and safety along the way as well. He is a bit young for the tools, but has done great sanding the first few pens. We will see how his attention lasts. He asks me every night if we can work in the shop and that is a good problem to have.
Look forward to meeting all of you in the different chats and posts and thanks to all of you that have posted your tips and tricks, I have finally figured out CA finishing from the tips everyone has posted, I have not mastered this task yet, but I am much happier with my finished product.
