I live in upstate New York, near Saratoga. Father to two amazing women and husband to another. Late career computer scientist working in an AI research group.

I began gathering the bits 'n bobs needed to turn pens last fall. Turned my first pens (Slimlines) this past Christmas break. I'm primarily interested in using wood. I'm less interested in chasing beautiful grain or figure (I tend to think all well-finished wood has some appeal) than in sourcing materials that are meaningful in some way. For example, I am currently working on pens for my team, who worked with me over several years at field test sites throughout the eastern United States, using wood from the camera mounting brackets we used to deploy our systems.

Similarly, I just made myself this big 'ol carpenter's bench pencil using wood (ashe) from the lot we cleared to build the house we've lived in for the last 20 years

Welcome aboard. Good job on the carpenters pencil. You're a lot like me, I like tying the pen to the person. Since getting back into this recently I've found some old blanks and wood I purchased many years ago. Stuff I've found include Wrigley Field, Yankee stadium and Notre Dame bleacher wood, Robert Frost Tree By My Window blanks from that famous tree and even some Queen Elizabeth tree wood. It's gonna be fun tying that stuff to people.

Welcome from Utah Keith!

That is a handsome carpenter's pencil. Small world, I'm working on one of those (in brass) right now.

Welcome from just down the Thruway from you. I'm heading your way in March for the NE woodworkers show in Sara Springs. Highly recommended.

Welcome to IAP. Lived in Queens, NY many decades ago. Many people hear New York and picture high rise buildings and brownstones. Very few are aware of the beauty of upstate NY.

I generally tell people "Think Vermont" (especially true since I grew up in the Catskill mountains when it was still very much dairy country)
