Welcome aboard, Kelly. I'm retired Navy as well. You will get a lot of help here and constructive criticism. Your pens look great!
However, I will provide the same advice I received here about Celtic Knots:
1. Do not cut completely through your blanks.
2. Ensure your blanks are completely square and the same thickness on all sides.
3. Make sure your fill material is exactly the same thickness as the kerf of your saw blade. (This assuming you use a tablesaw)
4. Set up a stop block on your sled or miter gauge and always cut from the same end.
5. A 52-53 degree knot seems to be the most pleasing to the eye. This would also depend on blank length.
6. Some use a 1,2,3,4 sequence of cutting. I started doing 1,3,2,4 sequence and have never changed, so I have nothing to compare against.
It is a great feeling when you turn your knot blank round and you see all the loops of the knot line up.
Good luck and have fun!
Mike
