Greetings all.

I grew up in Michigan and got into woodworking shortly after my wife and I got married. Did scroll saw work making children puzzles from simple to complex, and holiday deco. Did some small furniture type stuff for several years.

Moved to Ohio for 20 some years due to wife's job. Sold our home in 2021 ,along with the majority of my tools, and when full time RV for a year and a half. We bought home last year in eastern Tennessee and started from scratch buying replacement wood working equipment.

I got interested in turning this past Spring as I wanted to get into something "lighter" being 65 and took an intro class to turning in May, and then a pen turning class in June, made my first pen and was hooked. Bought my first ever lathe, a Penn State Turncrafter Commander 10 inch VS and been 'tinkering" with it till I could get my pen turning gear. Hopefully by the end of this August I can get my 2nd pen turned.

Welcome aboard!

My wife is from Tullahoma, so we get to Tennessee annually. Been all over. Such a beautiful state.

I have the same lathe and have turned a ton of pens through it. Nice tool for the price.

Greetings from Nebraska and welcome to the IAP Community. That's an outstanding first pen - congratulations. The 27/64, single tube, style, most commonly called "Sierra style" is a great choice for starting out. Many often start out with the Slimline style pens because they are typically less expensive, but are much more of a challenge in my opinion, due to their thickness (thin-ness?) of the wood remaining after turning it to shape. There are also inherent design features in the Sierra style that help getting a good fit between the blank and pen hardware less critical. Of course the Sierra style also makes a very attractive pen - like yours.

Regards,
Dave
