Hi all,
Thanks Jeff, for the nice welcome message. I guess I'm about as "green" as it gets, with regard to pen turning. Since I am just trying to convince myself that this is what I want to do, I don't even have a lathe yet. So I probably don't even qualify as a "newbie" yet. Maybe "newbie-wannabe" is more accurate.

I have PSI's catalog and a couple others, but just haven't made the final decision yet. Currently, I'm still driving truck, long-haul, so I'm gone for 3-4 weeks at a time. However, I am planning to retire sometime soon and this seems to be a very satisfying hobby. I like the idea of being able to start and finish a project the same day.

Looking forward to some good advice.

John

Welcome from Arizona! I used to live in Torrance before
I moved here. I'm just slightly less green than you, been turning
pens since December. You've come to the right place, lots of
nice people and collected knowledge here. I also didn't want to
spend a fortune on a lathe to start with, so I bought a used one
from Craig's List. Watched for a few weeks and finally found
what I was looking for (Jet 1014) at a good price. You might
be able to go that route, or if there's a local club there you might
be able to find a used lathe that way. Good luck and have fun.

Hi! Glad you are here having fun with us. Best advice I have after checking all new post every day. There are 2 very important sections at the top of
"THIS" page. Probably all others. The blue clickers rectangle at center top, and the blue horizontal clickers bar just under it. Also, the search opportunities. There are vast treasure deposites there. Very serious warning!! Don't go there!! Unless your "WANT!!!!!" to be totally hooked to this addiction! Look interesting? It goes fast like that. I'm really enjoying my Jet 1014 too. I agree with others too. Starting bigger would be great. If we can afford it. If not, that little 1014 can do a lot. Sweet little machine and guite as a mouse. Mine even grew a reverse switch."Carefull", reversing under power lets all that wonderfull smoke out of the expensive control board!!! Havn't found an affordable delay switch to prevent that yet. And you may be surprised what you will "decide" you can afford. Small things at least. They add up. Have lots of fun.

Oh yes. Sounds like you might have a lot of time for reading on the road. I know driving time is limited per day. LOL. We have long time drivers in the family.
