My name is Tiaan, I am a fourth generation craftsman living in Pretoria, South Africa.
My some of my earliest woodworking memories are of my dad at the lathe, and I did my first wood turnings when I was about seven, standing on a crate.
My interest in pens started in the early eighties, making goose quill pens whenever I found suitable feathers, and building a very small collection of fountain pens and mechanical pencils.
Woodworking became a hobby as I moved on to learning knifemaking, bladesmithing, jewellery making and about three years ago I started studying Japanese metal carving.
About two months ago I made a pen holder on a whim, a simple tapered copper tube with some fileworked detailing. I posted a photo on Instagram and looking at the profiles of people who liked the photo I discovered a world of pen making.
At this stage I am concentrating on pen holders (dipping pens) for use by calligraphers, using the abundance of fine woods available locally. I plan to make fountain pens in the future, until then I will be sitting in the background, absorbing info.
My first pen:
A recent oblique incorporating a copper ring I carved. the wood is pink ivory and african blackwood
I plan to make fountain pens in the future, until then I will be sitting in the background, absorbing info.
