I am relatively new to the pen making process. A friend of mine gave me quite a few Dear Antlers and since many of my friends are hunters my Bolt Action Bullet pens with Dear Antlers are a big hit.

I have been trying different pen kits from different companies but my one complaint is when I order a Pen Kit from company A. How do I know if I already have the bushings needed from company B?

If you have a thought on this I sure would like to know it.

Welcome Harold, from Sydney Australia,
You are right, Bushes are a real bummer.
If you can find an answer, please let us all know.
One way is to turn between centres, and measure all the way to your required dimension for the kit components, making an allowance for the proposed thickness of your finish..
This saves on the cost of bushes, but will take quite a bit of time doing one Blank at a time.
Then of course is the question of your accuracy, and remembering what you are turning too.
This can be quite a problem, when both ends are to a different dimension.
Best wishes,
Brian

Welcome I'm in the Harrisburg area

Assume you need new bushings for just about everything If the drill is different the bushings have to be

The ones that are often the same across the different brands are the cigar, slimline and Sierra and it's kin

Another welcome from Texas. Your question is one all new pen turners have. What is even more confusing is several different suppliers sell kits from the the same manufactures. The names of the kits are changed by some vendors to further confuse. For example, the sierra pen goes by several different names as does other kits. The confusion will clear up for you after awhile. The pen kit bushing and tubes article/chart is a good place to start. But, there are kits that have come out since the chart was last updated.

The answer to your question is yes, no and maybe. A specific question can be answered if you have an immediate concern or need.

I hope the weather is good the week before Christmas as I will be in Pittsburgh visiting my son and his family.

Do a good turn daily!
Don

Welcome

Hi! Yeah, I turn a few things out of antler too. Some people don't like the smell and say they won't turn it again, but I don't really mind it because the end product is so completely amazing to me! I've been inlaying colored hemp twine and this is a very cool embellishment!! Don

Real respirator equals no smell. And you can feel a little better about not breathing it in.

Welcome Harold.

I have similar concerns and tend to turn between centers if I cant quite match what I want.

I use a small template made from an off cut to gauge the diameter of the turn.

This is the forum for help as the Library has more tips than you can imagine.

Enjoy
