I turned my first pen this holiday weekend. I used some scrap red oak. I was not sure how the course graing would come out, but I am very pleased with the results. I am very excited about learning the art of pen turning and know this forum is going to be a great help.

Thanks
Morton Hatch

Morton, save that one and a year from now pull it out to see how far you've come. It sure beats my first attempt. BTW where in Oklahoma are you? If not to far from me I invite you to drop in sometime, I might be able to help a small bit.

Morton welcome from Buchanan, Ga. and you ought to take Oklahoman up on the invite he is an excellent artist when it comes to pens. I`d almost go back to Fort Sill to get an invite from him.

Welcome Morton, from far west Kentucky, to the addiction, sometimes referred to as the vortex. Take the offer from Oklahoman. He is one of our true artist and craftsmen. Be sure to give the library a good bit of time. The link is at the top of the page. You will find an article called Library Index. This covers tutorials on about anything pen making you can think of. You will also notice that there are articles listed by year. Much good info there as well. When these fail to answer your questions, by all means post it here. I have never seen one go unanswered very long. You might also want to give this thread a good look. It has some very good info for the beginning pen turner; http://content.penturners.org/library/general_reference/Getting_started_in_pen_turning.pdf. Grab some wood, make some shavings and have fun all the while being safe.

Welcome also from Atoka. Take Roy up on his invite, as he is a wealth of knowledge. You're also welcome down in SE OK if you're in the area.

Welcome. That's a good looking pen. Red oak may not have a fancy reputation, but it makes some real nice looking pens like the one you have there.

It looks a lot better than my first pen, that's for sure...

Thanks everybody, Ya'll sure know how to make a body feel at home.

It looks like I may have a couple of new friends in Oklahoma too.
