What have I gotten myself into???? I looked into turning pens years ago but never had the time or $$$ to get in to it. A couple weeks ago my son and I took a beginners turning class at Woodcraft and we both had a blast. I was originally looking at buying a jet 10-15 vs. I was talking to a guy at Woodcraft after the class and he said they were getting a couple nova comet lathes with a free G3 chuck for about $450. I told him to call me when they came in...about 4-6 weeks. Then last Friday I get an email that they are having a 15% off JET tool sale. Great, I'll go pick up the Jet 1221 on sale. So I get there and they have the Jet I want and next to it is a Nova 1624-44 on sale for $500 off. Yep, I left with the Nova 1624, somehow I justified it to myself. The kid really wants to turn some decent size bowls! I've got the lathe, turning tools, grinder and the wolverine jig. I think I'm going to pick up a couple 2x2's and we'll practice on those until we get comfortable with the different tools. I can't wrap my head around all the stuff we still need, the list keeps growing! I've learned a bunch browsing through the forums here and look forward to making that first pen.

Thanks for all the info,
Rick

Welcome from Virginia!
I have a Jet mini and also an older Nova 1624-44 model 3000 with speed control, brake and reverse. It is a very nice lathe! You will enjoy it.

Happy turning with your son......do you have a lathe schedule yet?

Welcome! You're finding out that the lathe will open up creative ideas and a LOT more purchases. It is great to have a tool that helps you spend time together with your son.

Welcome Rick, and your Son, from Sydney Australia.

Please research the IAP Library before you spend too much, also look up your nearest IAP Chapter, those Guys will give you all the good advice on what is really required.
Brian.

Trust me Rick...a 2x2 makes a lousy bowl!!! My cheerios spilled over the sides...I was still hungry, what a disaster!! Look around and have fun!!

Welcome from Medina. I grew up in Willoughby!

When you get settled in... check out future dates for our local chapter. We met 2 weeks ago and will probably again in 2-3 months.

Enjoy (keep the checkbook open).

Welcome from Akron
We have a very active group here in NEO
keep an eye on the local chapter forum, next meeting should be towards the end of April.
Don't be afraid to ask, you will not find a more giving group that IAP.
