Hello to all. I have always had some interest in woodworking throughout the years, and recently started carving and bought a small lathe and have made some pens. The lathe I have is o.k., but already I see where I will be limited in a short time. I don't have ambitions of making large bowls or turning chunks of wood that are 24 inches in diameter. I would, however, like to do more than pens. Question to all who will take the time to answer: Would you entertain the thought of looking at an older, maybe 10 years old, Craftsman lathe that was rarely used, or spend another $100 or so on something like the Jet 1220?

Thanks in advance.

Welcome aboard. As far as the lathe goes, my personal choice would be spending the extra money for a small Jet or Rikon. Rockler also sells a small lathe that has received some decent reviews

If you plan on turning small bowls or do spindle work, I strongly recommend getting a variable speed model. The time saved from having to adjust the pulleys for turning, sanding and finishing is well worth the extra bucks.

Check out Craigslist.

Jerry...Welcome from NW Ohio...I bought a Rikon 70-050 VS and have not regretted anything about that purchase. Can't compare to the 1220 or the 46-460 as I've never owned either. Good luck and show us some pics when you make a choice and turn some pens...George

I would agree with the sentiment - stay away from the craftsman- I had an older one that was hardly used and I found out why - when you use them they tend to wear out and break! # months later I bought a new lathe! (My wife said I planned that!) I would go with the jet -also there were some good reviews on the new nova mini several weeks ago

Thanks for the responses. To Chris, I am located in Vermilion. Not too awful far from Cedar Point in Sandusky. I am not far from Bob Jackson in Elyria either....lol. Thanks again for the responses. I thought it might be better to go newer, but I like to get confirmation from others too.

Welcome from Corsicana, TX.

Check craigslist out. I've purchased 2 Jet 1014s & a Nova DVR off of craigslist. Definately some good buys out there if you're patient.

Welcome to the IAP - from near Toledo, OH. Woodworkers seem to be some of the nicest people in cyberspace, and the IAP seems to have the best of the best.

Although bigger than what you're looking for, I have the Jet 1642 EVS-2 and love it (of course when I bought it new in 2007 it was only $1440). All the Jet's seem to be nice lathes. The new 1221VS seems particularly interesting.

I'm just getting into carving. If only I had more time to try everything I want to do.

George, I have turned five pens so far on the Wilton lathe I have. Posted a pic of the one I did for the class I took at Woodcraft on FaceBook, but will wait til I master the craft a little more.....lol. All slim line pens and seem to be in the darker woods, I have to diversify. Wife and I attended the wood carving show at Sauder Village in October, and very much enjoyed it.

I have purchased a Jet 1220 VS. Not turned anything yet, as I have just unwrapped it lastnight and still cleaning the protective gunk off of it. Now I have to look into making a stand, as it sits a little too high on existing workbench for my liking.
