Hi all,
My name is John Twiss from Annesley Woodhouse in Nottinghamshire, England.
I started turning pens about 6 months ago. Initially it started as a hobby, but unable to get a job it has turned into a bit of a "cottage (garage really) industry". Currently I've been selling pens on Fleabay but intend to start up my own website in the new year, as I think Fleabay down values the uniqueness and craftmanship that peaple put into their pens.
If anyone is interested, here is a link to some of my pens: Click Here

At present I turn my pens on a rather old Coronet lathe, but am waiting for the sales so I can get a new Axminster variable speed model!

Looking forward to using the wealth of knowledge on this site to start making closed end, and possible non kit pens.

Anyway, enough twaddle from me, just wanted to say Hi!

Welcome John, from far west Kentucky, to the addiction, sometimes referred to as the vortex. Be sure to give the library a good bit of time. The link is at the top of the page. You will find an article called Library Index. This covers tutorials on about anything pen making you can think of. You will also notice that there are articles listed by year. Much good info there as well. When these fail to answer your questions, by all means post it here. I have never seen one go unanswered very long. You might also want to give this thread a good look. It has some very good info for the beginning pen turner; http://content.penturners.org/library/general_reference/Getting_started_in_pen_turning.pdf. Grab some wood, make some shavings and have fun all the while being safe.

Welcome and enjoy your stay with us!!

The lathe will be the LEAST expensive thing you buy (in terms of total cash spent) now that you are here as well. Just wait till you see all the great blanks and other tools that people offer... :biggrin:

Looking forward to seeing some of your work in the "Show Off Your Pens" forum.

Tom

Welcome. Ask lots of questions and expect 100 different answers. It's great becasue they give you options. Once again, Welcome and Merry Christmas.

Hello John from Nottinghamshire. The ol' "trouble and stife" noticed the dip pen and was impressed. She's a calligrapher and I'm looking for sources of the little metal sleeves that hold the nibs.
Good luck and have fun (that's the main thing).

Thanks to all for the warm welcome!

@Randyrls
I got the pen boxes made in China. I think they used hot foil for the printing, but not too sure. Turned out to be a nightmare anyway, as it cost a lot more to handle customs/delivery this end than expected. About 70% of the boxes are faulty, and I'm having to take them apart to glue the hinge mounting points. Complained to supplier who offered me 200 free boxes on my next order.....I won't be using them again! :mad:

@Alanhil
I made the dip pen as a special order for someone, but intend to experiment in the future making them. I got the inserts from Stiles and Bates, Here

A very merry Christmas to all! :)
