Hello all. Great forum. I've been looking to get into pen turning for a while now. First off, I just like quality workmanship in anything. And second, I really like quality pens. After doing a bit of reading, pen turning seemed like something that I could at least try my hand at at home.
I've got some challenges ahead of me though. Namely, I have no experience with using a lathe. (I've got a couple of specific questions on this that I'll post below--my apologies if these questions belong on another thread). So I'm basically preparing myself for the worst--probably a cutting tool projectile or something like that for the trial run.
A couple of questions--
What type of oil to use for lathe? (Rikon 70-100) What parts to oil before use?
Should I mount the centers into the workpiece/wood first (before mounting centers on the lathe?) I've read some conflicting info on that.

Thanks for any and all help. Great forum. I look forward to chatting with you guys.

the only thing I use oil for is cleaning the lathe ways, everything must be between centers at sometime with some exceptions when you are finishing the bottom of a piece. learn to utilize the tailstock for safety reasons until you need to move it out fo the way to complete the bottom of the piece. don't worry the lathe is easy, I learned that fast is not always best in the learning stages.

I recommend a few lessons before beginning.

Welcome aboard from Charlotte. Check out the library -- there is a wealth of information on penturning available at your fingertips. Also check out the Local Chapters Forum for a link to the Raleigh IAP Chapter.

Welcome from Georgia. Good advice to check out a local IAP chapter to attend. You will find a great wealth of info. and great people to meet and learn from. As far as what type of oil and where to apply it, check the owners manual that should be a great place to determine your answers.

Welcome from Charlotte.

For learning and mentoring on the lathe, not just pens, look at the local AAW chapter near you. (Woodturner.org ---> About us -- organization -- Local Chapters)

Also, the NC Woodturning symposium on the first weekend of November is another great place to learn.

And a fun place to learn is through local demonstrators -- Frank Penta (www.woodspriteturnings.com) has an open shop on the first Friday of each month. Check out his website, and give him a call. Not specific for pens, but you'll get some great info on general lathe work and tool control.

Rob,
Welcome to the group. It's a great bunch of folks here and a wealth of information.
You're welcome to check out the local chapter here in Raleigh or give me a PM and we can set up some time to review the basics with you.
