I've been lurking for about a month or so scouring the posts trying to gain as much knowledge as possible before going out and buying anything. I have wanted to begin turning pens but just could not find the time nor did I have a wood lathe.
As it turns out Craigslist has forced me into getting started. I found a trio of Nova Mercury lathes (I know they are a little old, but they are in very good shape) and ended up getting them all for $80. Two work just fine after cleaning them up. The third will need a new set of bearings or it may just become a parts machine.
Now it's time to get some tools and start practicing making chips. I have not turned anything since high school so it has been a couple of years. I'm looking forward meeting and learning from the active Ohio Chapter of IAP. As soon as I get going I will post some pics of my first pen.
