Hi! Name's Matt - thought I'd introduce myself. I'm from southwest MN.

I am not new to woodworking - I am primarily a flatworker. However, I'm starting to dabble in a little bit of turning. Previously I've turned some bottle stoppers, rolling pins, and handles for things like beer bottle openers. I just turned my first pen on Friday, something I've been wanting to do for a while, and I'm hooked. The instant gratification of being able to finish a pen or other project on the lathe fairly quickly, compared to the months (or more) it can take me to build a piece of furniture, is nice. My family and I moved from ND to MN in March and I finally just about have my shop up and running. My first pen is the first finished item that I've been able to produce in my new to me shop - a one car garage that my wife has realized will never be able to have a car parked in it.

I recognize a few names here from other forums I frequent and am looking forward to being part of this community too and learning from guys who are very experienced at this.

I've attached a pic of my first pen - Brown Mallee Burl with a Mesa kit in Gold and Gunmetal. Finished with Woodturner's Finish. Figured I'd try WTF on a pen I know I'm going to keep so I can test how it holds up. I've never tried a CA finish on anything, but CA fumes sometimes irritate me, so I thought I'd see how WTF holds up. I won't take credit for the bowl that the pen is displayed in - I received that in a trade on another forum in exchange for sending some wood.

Welcome from Texas.

Nice job on the pen - I generally prefer friction polish on wood pens over CA. I do sometimes use Craft Coat if I want something a bit more durable than a friction polish.

If you want some odorless CA glue, the 2P-10 brand from FastCap is "nearly" odorless and is about the same price as ordinary CA. There are also some CA glues advertised as odorless at a bit higher price.

Hello Matt and Welcomed to the maddness.

LOL. Hope that you enjoy the fun as much as we do.
Looks like you are very well on your way to making wonderful pens.
St. Cloud is just a hop/skip/ and a jump away.......don't be afraid to come and join the fun here locally.......you are always welcomed.

Thanks, all, for the welcome and the comments on my first pen and helpful tips! Looking forward to learning from everyone here.

hi from australia

welcome to the site great looking pen. I use ca glue on all my
wood pens I use a mask when putting it on. and use a fan to blow
smells out of shed.

Again, thank you all for the welcome!

Welcome aboard!!!!

Scott - that SN Gent w/ Yellow Cedar Burl I got from you is probably my favorite pen and sees daily use!

(Scott's one of the people I mentioned as being familiar with from other forums. I always enjoy it when he posts pics of his milling, his wood, or his pens. I also have a small collection of pens turned by others, and that includes a pen made by Scott.)
