Hi, I have been doing woodworking for most of my life, started by helping my dad and graduated to my own tools after college. I've been turning since around 2008 just for fun, pens mostly with the occasional Christmas ornament sprinkled in. I came across the site while looking for lathe speed for putting on a CA finish and have been hooked by the cool kitless pens on here. Thanks for the wealth of information and eye candy.

Welcome from Texas

So what lathe speed did you settle on for applying a CA finish?

I have a 5-speed lathe & normally do most everything in 4th gear. I don't use a CA finish very often, but when I did, I would slow my lathe down to 1st or 2nd gear. A couple of weeks ago, I left the lathe in 4th gear just for the heck of it & it turned out to be the best CA finish I'd ever done.

So my personal opinion is that technique is much more important than your lathe speed. Keep experimenting & have fun!

Everything I found said turn it to the lowest speed when you apply it. I upgraded to the Jet 1221 last year and the lowest I can get on the high speed setting is ~170 which seemed too slow, so I turned it to between 200 and 400. The cap end of the pen turned out pretty good, but I need to redo the body since I sanded through the finish.
