Hello all - my name is Shawn Sherman and I have been wood turning for just about a year. I have lived in South Carolina for about 10 years and am originally from Los Angeles. I am married and have 2 children (son 11, daughter 4). This is the first community (not social media) that I have ever joined and from what I have read so far I am very excited about sharing and learning here.
I am a computer specialist by day and an extremely novice woodworker by night. In the past 5 years I have built a semi respectable low end workshop (most of my tools come from Sears or Harbor Freight). I have never had any hobbies in my life until woodworking over the past few years. Even that didn't really blow my skirt up. But then I bought my lathe. I had been watching many many many videos on youtube regarding wood turning and could not wait to get a lathe. I envisioned making bowls, ornaments, boxes, birdhouses, etc. Then one day I saw Cap'n Eddie turning pens for Freedom Pens. That's when I knew that I wanted to make pens. I have only made a couple dozen so far with varying degrees of success and failure (like when a $20 trustone blank shatters - that'll take the wind out of your sails). But, as time goes on I am learning more and breaking less.
I found this community yesterday while searching for how to make your own custom acrylic blanks. I have already learned so much from the wonderful information found in the library and on youtube videos submitted by members.
I look forward to many hours of reading, submitting, and learning.
