Hello, I'm new! I'm a 25 year old grad student in Chicago.

When I say that I'm new, I mean I've got no tools and no machines and no supplies. I picked up a copy of Woodcraft and I saw these "pen kits" and blanks and wondered, "What if?" I saw the lathes in the catalogue and saw how expensive they can be! I've been looking all around and I'm ready to invest!

SHOP!! There are many places in Chicagoland to purchase for "less than retail". Of course, if you can find a good lathe on Craigslist or some equivalent (locally we have "pennysaver" in Wis), you can find good "deals".

Plan a "field trip" at the end of October---soon to be announced meeting in Wisconsin will feature the IAP Collection and a presentation by Mark James---WORTH THE TRIP--I have seen it.

What part of Chi??

Thanks for the warm welcome everyone!!! :)

Ed, when I say I'm new, I am NEW! I'll be doing quite a bit of shopping. I did a bit of looking around on craigslist, but I think I'll be better off getting a fresh lathe for a fresh turner! Right now, I'm looking at the Delta 46-460, Rikon 70-100, and the Nova Comet II. From everything I've been reading, I think the Delta might be the right choice.

I also have to keep in mind that I'll be getting the drill press, clamp, drill bits, miter saw, mandrill saver, turning tools, etc. I want to start out right!

(I'm from Chicago Chicago, not one of the fake suburbs that people lump in... haha)

PM me if you like---what school?? I grew up in Palatine.

Ok, a good mini lathe (I have a Delta that I love, but lots of folks say their cust service is a problem). Now, add a good scroll chuck and a good Jacob's chuck (I have several from Harbor Freight)--now you don't NEED a drill press. In fact, you don't NEED any other large hardware to make a pen.

Extendable mandrel, bushings, a turning tool or two and you are "good to go"!!

Welcome from 2 hours South West of Chicago in LaSalle County. I started the same way, looking over a few magazines and wondering. Its been all down hill since then. lol

I started with a few smaller mini lathes from Menards for $80 and got a little over a year out of each before they quit on me. I've never used the Rikon so I cant comment on it. I have the Delta 46-460 and love it. Its very quiet and smooth running with forward and reverse variable speed. Just an over all strong working Mid Lathe.

Looking forward to seeing your work. Make sure to check out the library here. Its full of info and "how to" and will having you spending more. lol

Welcome aboard!

Again, thank you everyone for the warm welcome! I'm loving it here already!

I broke down and ordered the Delta 46-460 and some supplies. They'll actually be arriving tomorrow, I believe. Some stuff is coming from Woodturners, so I hope it all come quickly so I can get started! :D

Welcome from Tampa, FL .... Home of the never ending summer.... I am fairly new at turning myself. You will find a lot of very good advice and ideas on this site. Have fun, don't be afraid to experiment, but most of all be safe.

Where about in Chicago? I grew up in the south suburbs.

Stomping grounds were Oak Forest, Tinley Park, Alsip, Oak Lawn, etc... Moved out in '96
