I am a newcomer to pen making but an old timer in age. I inherited my dad's tools and materials he used 20 years ago and am just now getting it out and started to learn to make pens. I am excited to learn from seasoned veterans as much as I can. I will be asking a lot of questions about older pen kits that came from Hut Products way back when. I plan to honor my dad by using his tools and his kits and wood materials to make Christmas gifts for friends and family. Hope to hear from some of you soon.

Welcome Don. Since you inherited your Dad's tools from 20 years ago, you will probably have some good HSS tools (chisels) for turning. Those need to be sharpened regularly and honed regularly with pens. Beginning about 10 years ago, Carbide Insert tools came into being for pens and bowls, and they are fairly sharp and don't have to be sharpened like HSS does.

I have some carbide inserts and use them at times, but for the fine finishing of the turning process, I use HSS. I remember the HUT pens but never bought any of them, although I did buy a few HUT finishing products early on.

We still have a few guys here that used some HUT pens years ago.

Hi Don !! . Warm welcome to IAP !! . :) :)

I will be asking a lot of questions about older pen kits that came from Hut Products .... Hope to hear from some of you soon.

Hut products were before my time, but I am sure there are others familiar with them.
It will be fun to get exposed to the archaeology of pen kits !!

If you ask the questions, you'll certainly hear back.
Be sure to include pictures of what you are doing.

Welcome Don. I spent over 20-years in the Central Valley before retiring and moving south. Couldn't take the summer heat and the bone chilling winter cold anymore. Don't have any of my Dads tools (he really didn't have any) but do have several of my Grand-dads.

Use them with pride and remembrance.

Ray

Welcome from Texas, Don. The IAP Bushings & Tubes app has the instructions for a number of the Hut kits.

Welcome Don

As Hank says the tools are likely to be HSS or maybe even carbon steel which will take a finer edge but not hold it for as long. If carbon they need care when grinding not to discolour.

I have as yet not gone for carbide as HSS gives me the results I want.

Either way enjoy the ride and the satisfaction
